The University of Montana celebrates the state’s young contemporary artists in a new exhibit.
Nineteen Under 39: Celebrating Montana’s Emerging Artists — The Michele and Loren Hansen Biennial Exhibition opens to the public at noon, March 28.
The inaugural invitational exhibition features 19 artists ages 19 to 39 including: Shelby Baldridge, Jesse Blumenthal, Grace Brogan, Christa Carleton, Miah Chalfant, Wyatt Christopherson, Mya Cluff, Aspen Decker, Robin Graf Dorsey, Louis Habeck, Anna Johnson, David Miles Lusk, Rachael Marjamaa, Danielle O'Malley, Stella Nall, Alayna Rasile, Daphne Sweet, Dagny Walton and April Werle.
The artists were chosen by a statewide selection committee from more than 100 applicants.
Purchase prizes of $10,000, $7,000 and $3,000 will be awarded to the top three artists, allowing the museum to retain artworks for its permanent collection. Winners, including people’s choice and honorable mention, will be announced at an awards ceremony in May. Two Champions of the Arts, an Inspirational Artist and a Longtime Supporter of the Arts also will be recognized.
Winning artists and members of the selection committee will participate in a panel discussion during the run of the exhibition, which will close Sept. 25. Organizers plan to host this exhibition every other year at the museum.
The exhibit is supported by university alumni Michele and Loren Hansen. The Hansens have provided a commitment to the University Montana Foundation that allows the museum to showcase and acquire the artwork of young contemporary artists from across the state.
