PREP ROUNDUP: Timberlake advances to state baseball play-in round

SPIRIT LAKE — Staring at the same scenario as last Friday’s Intermountain League finale, Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson walked to the mound and hoped it was going to turn out a little better.
In that game, Timberlake led 10-3 with one out in the bottom of the seventh before the Bonners Ferry Badgers rallied with eight runs to take an 11-10 win.
On Wednesday, it did for the Tigers.
Timberlake sophomore Ryker Brennan allowed one run over 6.1 innings before reach his pitch limit, then turned it over to senior Ethan Pecor, who closed out a 7-2 win at John Shaffer Field, advancing to the state 4A play-in round next Friday and Saturday in Spirit Lake.
Timberlake (14-3) will host a best-of-3 series, with that winner advancing to the double-elimination championship tournament on May 15-17 at Melaluca Field in Idaho Falls.
“It means a lot,” Johnson said. “It’s really hard to win a district title, and we talk about all year long. The games with Bonners Ferry are always tight. It’s been a lot of hard work and sticking to the gameplan. Next week, we’ll have to win two games like this week. If we can get out of next week, anything can happen.”
Bonners Ferry finished 6-13 after finishing 12th in the latest MaxPreps.com rankings, which are used to determine the 8-team field for the state play-in round.
“I think they’re a way better team than their record indicates,” Johnson said. “They always hit and are a tough team.”
Sophomore Gage Haines had two hits and two runs scored for Timberlake.
“We’ve got a bunch of kids that can hit and put the ball in play,” Johnson said. “We were able to score some runs and we’re playing the best defense we’ve played all season. We’re starting to figure some things out.”

MOSCOW — The fourth-seeded Hawks had their season come to an end, falling to the top-seeded Bears in a 4A Region 1 tournament game at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.
Senior Evan Shanley had two hits and sophomore Griffin Tamangi and senior Tadgh Ellwood scored runs for Lakeland, which finished 5-18.
Moscow, last year’s state 4A champion, advances to faces Lewiston in the regional championship game on Friday.

Peyton Lingo had an RBI single to score Landen Holmes to make it 3-1 in the sixth for St. Maries (4-17), which advances to face Orofino today in Orofino.
Blake Rose singled to score Robert Liddicoat to make it 3-2 for Kellogg, which stranded the tying run at second base.

MOSCOW — Raygen Dutton hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Delilah Zimmerman hit a grand slam in the third inning of the first game for the Hawks, who swept an Inland Empire League doubleheader from the Bears at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.
Jaiden Corbey drove in three runs in the second game for Lakeland (8-14, 6-10 IEL), which hosts Lewiston in a doubleheader today.
Moscow is 7-17, 4-14.

SPIRIT LAKE — Reese Allaway had three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Tigers in an Intermountain League win over the Badgers at Timberlake High.
“Reese hit the ball well for us today,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. The last few games, she has been nails, both on the field and at the plate. Every one of our players made an impact at some point in the game. It was a great day to honor our seniors as well.”
Freshman Shae Jones struck out nine and allowed two hits for Timberlake (14-3, 3-0 IML), which hosts Game 1 of the 4A District 1 tournament against Bonners Ferry (7-10, 0-3) on Monday.
Since Timberlake swept the regular season series, the Tigers just need a win on Monday to advance to the state 4A tournament May 15-17 at Skyview High in Nampa. If Bonners Ferry wins on Monday, the teams will play a best-of-3 series to determine the district champion.
