BONNERS FERRY – The Badgers softball team (11-9) breezed past the Priest River Spartans (0-12) on an April 23 double-header in Bonners Ferry, winning the first game 18-3 and the second game 17-8.

Two days later, the Badgers hosted their district rival Timberlake Tigers (13-3), and Bonners Ferry lost both games, 1-7 and 0-15, respectively.

Bonners Ferry started the next week with a road game Tuesday against Post Falls (9-9), dropping that matchup by a final score of 1-15.

Bonners Ferry showed composure in the wins over Priest River, falling behind early in the second game 1-5, before storming back in a collective effort to win the nine runs. Six Badgers – Frago, Petersen, Frederickson, Falck, Dickson and Hillard – all had multi-hit performances in the game.

But in the other matchups against more formidable opponents, Bonners Ferry struggled to get on base against elite pitching.

In the 1-7 loss to Timberlake, Bonners Ferry recorded just one hit in the game, off the bat of Ryelle Short, who last week had a historic stretch of six games, with three homers, three triples and two doubles.

Short was also the only Badger to record a hit in the loss to Post Falls. She had a single and a double from the lead-off spot against Rylan Morrison, who pitched a complete game with zero earned runs and 11 strikeouts.

Bonners Ferry will compete against Timberlake in a three-game series in May for the chance to win the 4A District 1.

The Badgers will host Orofino on May 3 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Lessons learned in Bonners Ferry

It brings me no joy to announce that this is my final piece for the Bonners Ferry Herald. Though I am not entirely to blame, some of my articles here have admittedly spurred controversy, but my hope is that few, if any of you look to the heavens and celebrate my departure, as I have sincerely worked to the best of my ability to provide fair and accurate local reporting.
