Crosstown Softball: Sweep completed
JON ALLEN | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 1 week AGO
Have a day, Olivia Warriner.
The Wolfpack sophomore blasted two long balls and drove in seven runs as Glacier overpowered crosstown rival Flathead 19-2 at Kidsport Thursday.
Warriner opened up the scoring in the top of the first with a three-run blast that just carried the fence in straight away center field. Her second homer left no doubt, crushing the ball out to left-center for a two-run shot.
“I just waited for the pitch that I wanted,” Warriner said. “The first one I wasn’t sure of, but the second one I could tell.”
After Warriner’s first inning dinger, Glacier (13-2) quickly grew the advantage as Karley Allen drove in one on a single to left. Aubree Gerber scored two more with a single and it was 6-0 Glacier without an out recorded.
Cazz Rankosky — in her second at-bat of the inning — added a two-run single before Warriner got her second hit of the inning, driving in two more with a line drive double off the fence. When Flathead finally got a chance to hit the Bravettes faced a 12-0 deficit.
“Top of the lineup to the bottom of the lineup, everyone is getting hits and moving runners,” Glacier coach Abby Snipes said. “We played great defense overall against a Flathead team that can put the ball in play.”
That’s where Glacier’s pitching shined. Olivia Gibbons started put down the Bravettes (2-14) in order in the first inning. She faced a bit of adversity in the second as Kinsey Lake singled and Olivia Nyman doubled to put two in scoring position, but a pair of strikeouts got her out of the jam.
Warriner added her second homer in the third after Rankosky reached on an error to make it 14-0. Allen made it 15-0 with a double later in the inning.
Flathead found their offensive footing in the bottom of the third as Glacier put Chloe Farrell in the circle. Reese Conley reached on an error that helped Mackenzie Brandt home. Conley scored later in the inning on a passed ball.
“It’s tough to come out with a deficit when you haven’t had a chance to help yourself, Bravettes coach Brittany Williams said. “It’s hard to stay in a positive headspace, but I’m proud of them for doing that and they showed some fight and got us to a few more innings because of it.”
Farrell shut the Bravettes down over the final two innings, including a three-strikeout fourth where she threw just 10 pitches. She finished with five strikeouts. At the plate she went 2-for-2. The game ended after five innings due to the run rule.
“That hit just got me riled up and I took that to the mound,” Farrell said.
“We are very blessed,” Snipes said of the Wolfpack’s pitching depth. “We know we have four pitchers that have seen some varsity innings for us and they support each other.”
Next up for both teams is a Saturday doubleheader in Helena against the Helena High Bengals and Capital Bruins.
