NIC SOFTBALL: Cardinals rally to sweep No. 25 Salt Lake

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Faith Nichols singled to score freshman Mckenzie Parks with the winning run with two out in the eighth inning of the second game as North Idaho College rallied to beat No. 25 Salt Lake 5-4 to sweep a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Memorial Field on Thursday. 

Kristine Schmidt, a former Coeur d’Alene High star, struck out seven in the opener as the Cardinals beat the Bruins 3-2. 

NIC, limited to two hits in the opener, took the lead on a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning to score sophomore Haydyn Yamaguchi. 

Salt Lake took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth in the second game, but NIC tied the game on an RBI groundout by freshman Alli Drake to score freshman Emily Hanchey to make it 4-4. 

Freshman Maliyah Mann struck out 10 in the second game for NIC (20-24, 12-18 SWAC), which hosts Salt Lake (33-10, 20-10) today in another doubleheader starting at noon at Memorial Field.
