6A DISTRICT 1 SOFTBALL: Lake City strikes late to eliminate Post Falls

COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Brooklyn Caan’s two-run homer capped a five-run sixth inning that broke a 6-all tie, and the second-seeded Lake City Timberwolves went on to beat the third-seeded Post Falls Trojans 11-6 in the loser-out first round of the 6A District 1 softball tournament Saturday at Lake City.
Lake City (16-7-1) will play No. 1 seed Coeur d’Alene (16-2) in a best-of-3 series for the district title and lone berth to state. Game 1 is Tuesday at Coeur d’Alene High; Game 2 is Thursday at Lake City; Game 3, if necessary, is next Saturday at Coeur d’Alene.
Post Falls finished 10-11.
Lake City trailed Post Falls 6-3 before tying the game with three runs in the fourth inning.
In the sixth, Alexandria Routon walked to lead off. One out later, Layla Gugino was intentionally walked. Karsyn DeMent singled to left, and an error on the play allowed Routon and Gugino to score. Mariah Thomas doubled in courtesy runner Aubrie Goncalves, and Caan followed with her two-run shot.
In the bottom of the first, DeMent singled in a run, Thomas delivered a sacrifice fly and Maddy Blood singled in a run for a 3-1 Lake City lead.
Post Falls sophomore Kulani Peahu-Michael hit a two-run triple in the top of the second to tie the game at 3. Lexie McCarroll’s RBI single in the fourth put the Trojans up 6-3.
