Helen Carol Method Newton, 83, passed away Friday, April 25, 2025, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. 

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Sandpoint United Methodist Church with the Rev. Catherine Lyle officiating.

Helen was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Maywood, Calif., to Harold and Ruth Method. She grew up and attended schools in Bonner County, graduating from Sandpoint High School in the class of 1959. She then attended the University of Idaho for two years and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

Helen married Skip Newton on June 24, 1961, in Sandpoint. She worked for Bud Moon at the Moon Funeral Home from 1959-1969, from 1969-1979 she worked for Dr. Gerald Madsen, DDS, Dr. Jim Arthurs, and Les and Pat Rogers at M&J Market, and from 1979-1981 she worked for Cooke, Lamanna, Smith and Cogswell. Helen served as Sandpoint City Clerk from her appointment by Mayor Sally Cupan in 1981 until her retirement in 2005.

Helen has been a member of Sandpoint United Methodist Church since 1955, served on Sandpoint City Council from 2006-2010, was president for five terms, P.E.O., Chapter V, served on the Bonner General Hospital Board, and Pend Oreille Hospital District and Sandpoint Centennial Commission. She also enjoyed quilting, playing bridge, and organizing SHS class reunions for the classes in the 1950s.

She is survived by her husband, Skip Newton of Sandpoint; two daughters, Laurie (Ted) Kunkel of Latah, Wash., and Pam (Paul) Rugloski of Harrison, Idaho; three grandsons, Jordan Kunkel, Matt Fogg and Zachary Kunkel; one granddaughter, Zoe Fogg; five great-grandchildren, Rowan, Callan, Kaden, Bethany, and Lincoln;  and younger brother, Cal (Mary Ann) Method of Kennewick, Wash.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sandpoint United Methodist Church, 711 Main St., Sandpoint, ID 83864; Bonner County Museum, 611 S. Ella, Sandpoint; or to Sandpoint Area Seniors, 820 Main St., Sandpoint.
