PREP TRACK & FIELD: Priest River boys capture first league title since 1993

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 1 week AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 12, 2025 6:45 PM

Lamanna's lead the way

ST. MARIES — Over the last 32 years, the Priest River High boys track & field team has posted 10 runner-up finishes between the Intermountain and Central Idaho Leagues.

On Saturday at St. Maries High, the Spartans put it all together.

Priest River High senior Brayden Lamanna added his third and fourth gold medals with wins in the 800-meter run and 1600-meter run and his brother, junior Ian Lamanna, won the pole vault to lead the Spartans to the 3A Central Idaho League District 1-2 title — their first league title since 1993.

Brayden Lamanna, who won the 3200-meter run and was part of the winning 1600 sprint medley relay on Friday, posted times of 2:04.73 in the 800 and 4:35.41 in the 1600. Heading into the 3A state championship, he's ranked No. 6 in the 800 (2:02.72), No. 3 in the 1600 (4:26.46) and No. 2 in the 3200 (9:35.67).

Ian Lamanna's new personal best vault of 12 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault ranks as No. 3 all-time in school history and No. 5 in the state's 3A classification.

Senior Carter Korff added another gold medal to the Spartans' tally, winning the 200-meter dash in 23.68 seconds.

Priest River, which defeated runner-up Grangeville by 13 points, won two relays on Saturday. Korff, Ian Lamanna, Luccas Simcox and Kashas Wright won the 4x200 (1:34.48) and Ian Lamanna, Simcox, Doug Ezell and Wright won the 4x400 in 3:39.04.

Ezell added a second-place finish in the 800 (2:11.53), junior Niki Porinchok a second-place finish in the shot put (43 feet, 3 inches), and sophomore Gunnar Pettit was third in the pole vault with a new personal best (11 feet even) to round out Spartans' day two state qualifiers.

For the Lady Spartans, senior Lizzie McCracken won the 800-meter run (2:32.56) and junior Chase Smith improved her own school record and won the javelin (113 feet even) to lead Priest River to a third-place team finish.

Sophomore Haylee Jepson hurdled her way to gold in the 300-meter hurdles (55.15) to round out the Lady Spartans' individual winners.

It was the relays where Priest River's girls really shined, sweeping all three events on day two.

Ashlyn Korff, Jasmine Stark, Kylee Swoboda and Haley Braae combined to win the 4x100 relay (54.99) and the 4x200 relay (1:58.38) while Korff, McCracken, Stark and Swoboda won the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:33.23.

Swoboda, a Spokane CC commit, added a second-place finish in the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches) and Korff a third-place finish in the long jump (14 feet, 2 inches) to book a couple of more tickets to state.

All-in-all, 15 Priest River High athletes qualified for the state championship in 22 different events. The Spartans qualified six different relays in total, the most ever in school history. Priest River High head coach Jared Hughes said the team's success is the product of "amazing assistant coaches and athletes working their tails off all season long".

The 3A State Championship is set to be held this Friday and Saturday at Middleton High.
