May 13, 1975 – PROUDLY WE SALUTE…

Navy Airman Recruit Robert L. Inman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Bauthues, is a crew member aboard the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz, which is over 1,090 feet long, and is expected to operate on its initial nuclear power supply for the next 13 years.

Private Dale O. Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy E. Larson, Rt. 3, Sandpoint, celebrated eight weeks advanced training as an armor reconnaissance spec. at the U.S. Army Armor Center, Ft. Knox, Ky.

Fred J. Marienau, son of Dr. and Mrs. Fred E. Marienau, Sandpoint, was promoted to Army private first class while assigned as a clerk in the 3rd Armored Division in Hanau, Germany.

BUTTON #1 DRAWS RECORD PRICE

Paced by Jim Judd and Dave Wall, who bid a record $350 for K and K button number one, the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club hauled in $1,484 during the annual button auction last Friday.

ROGERS, PALMEN TAKE HONORS

Linda Rogers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Rogers, is valedictorian for the 1975 SHS graduating class. Named salutatorian was Brad Palmen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Palmen. Miss Rogers maintained straight A’s all four years of high school, while Palmen in his freshman year received one B in algebra. Both Miss Rogers and Palmen will speak during the Class Day program on May 22.

May 13, 1950 – WARNING: NO FIREWORKS

Prosecuting Attorney Robert McFarland advised Bonner county retail merchants not to stock up on Fourth of July fireworks, as their sale and use are prohibited by state law everywhere in Idaho. Special pyrotechnic displays, such as that planned by the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce for July 4, can be given a permit. McFarland said he wanted to give an early warning, so merchants would not get stuck with fireworks which could not be legally sold.

PIANO STUDENTS TO MUSIC FESTIVAL

Dorothy Warren, Jerry Farrar and Carol Witt, piano pupils of Mrs. Ruth Adams, auditioned in Spokane Saturday at the Greater Spokane Music festival, which was in progress there all week. Also auditioning at the festival were 11 piano students of Mrs. W.O. VanderVelden: Karen Becker, Marjorie Dahlstrom, Irene West, Rhoda Roth, Bonnie and Barbara Lyman, Richard Morse, Mary and Elizabeth Shields, Barbara Lindsey and May Hughes.

EVAN EMERY WINS TOP RATING

Friends and supporters of seven-year-old Evan Emery will be pleased to learn the little boy, who won all hearts when he sang on Farmer Gray’s “Country Store” program in February, received a rating of “excellent” at the greater Spokane Music Festival last week. Young Evan sang “Wonderful Mother of Mine” and the “Whiffenpoof Song.” Mrs. Merl Ebbe was accompanist for the lad.
