SPIRIT LAKE — Competing against nine other schools, most of which are much larger in size, the Clark Fork High seventh grade girls track & field team pulled off what some may have considered to be impossible. 

The junior high Lady Cats, with just five athletes, won six of 12 events and scored 119 total points, 26 more than the runner-ups, to win the district title outright this past Friday, May 2, at Timberlake High.

Gemma Lightfoot-Wood was first out of 66 in the 100-meter dash (14.10) and first out of 15 in the 100-meter hurdles (18.22). Kourtney Rogier also picked up two wins on the day, finishing first out of 25 in the long jump (12 feet, 8 inches) and first out of 18 in the 400-meter dash (1:10.47). Grace Thompson beat out 32 other competitors and won the shot put by nearly 5 feet (31 feet, 4.5 inches), also adding a second-place finish out of 25 in the discus (79 feet, 6 inches) and a third-place finish out of 13 in the high jump (4 feet even). Clark Fork added another gold medal to their tally in the 4x100 relay, beating out six other teams with a time of 56.55 seconds.

"This season, I was filled with awe as I watched these ladies work together and support each other," head coach Heather Cook said. "I was also so proud of them as they supported the teams around us offering encouragement and kind words. The trophy is a wonderful, tangible artifact that confirms their skillsets and determination as well as their hearts to succeed together." 

Of course, the trophy couldn't have been won without the contributions from Maddison Van Stone and Hannah Raynor. Raynor was second in the 100-meter dash (14.19), third in the 100-meter hurdles (19.13), and second in the long jump (12 feet, 6 inches). Van Stone was second out of 42 and 200-meter dash (30.39) and second in the 400 (1:10.78), helping propel Clark Fork to what is believed to be the first ever seventh grade girls track & field district championship in school history.
