The hard work and creativity of Southside Elementary School and Sandpoint Middle School students paid off at a recent Idaho Exhibition of Ideas 3D printing competition.

The Plant Pros from Southside won first place in the junior division for their outstanding design and also received the Student Choice Award, voted on by all participating students.

The middle school team, Rotten to the Core, won third place in the senior division for their innovative design.

The Idaho Exhibition of Ideas contest centers on digital design and fabrication, where students learn and practice design, iteration and rapid prototyping skills using 3D printing technology.

This year’s competition theme was agriculture science; students were tasked with identifying a problem related to agriculture science and developing a 3D-printed prototype to solve it.

They were required to create a product, show several iterations demonstrating improvements, make a slideshow and board, and pitch their product to the judges.

Additionally, during the competition, all participants had the opportunity to take a tour of North Idaho College’s Parker Technical Education Center. They explored various programs offered by the college, including mechanical design engineering, HVAC, auto body repair, diesel mechanic, and more, offering students valuable insight into potential future career paths.
