MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake Maverick Maddy Bond committed to compete in track and field for Eastern Washington University on Friday afternoon.

“I really liked the coaching staff there when I went on my visit,” she said. “Everyone was really nice and friendly, and I like the environment. It’s something I wanted to be a part of.”

Maddy participated in three sports throughout her high school career: track, basketball and volleyball. She said she enjoyed her time doing all three, but has some particularly fond memories running with the track team.

“Track has always been such a fun thing for me, something I wanted to continue to do,” she said.

Mavs Track and Field coach Mark Ward said Maddy was always a very dedicated and intense athlete for the team. She has shown a lot of strength in not only improving her own abilities but also boosting the abilities of those around her.

Ward said one of the first days he worked with her, he noticed that she was spending time with rookie players to teach them the drills the team was working on that day. Even at meets, she is never seen off to the side by herself but is always looking out for her teammates, he said.

“She is the epitome of what you want in a track and field team member,” said Ward. “She’s a teammate first and so, occasionally, you have to rein her in so that she remembers to focus on herself.”

This season Maddy has broken multiple of her personal records with her most recent being from the school’s meet last Thursday, where she earned a new personal record in triple jump of 37 feet 11 inches. The coach said Maddy has been getting serious about strength training and this will be a great asset to go into her career at Eastern with.

“I think that she’s really just starting to touch just the very base of what she’s capable of,” he said.

Maddy’s parents, Toby and Wendy Bond, said she has always been a very focused, determined and goal-oriented person. They said they are very proud of what their daughter has accomplished in her high school career and are very excited to see what she can do as she moves on to the next level.

“She’s been very competitive since a young age and just very committed to doing her best in everything that she does,” said Wendy.

They weren’t sure at first what sport she would choose out of the three she had played throughout her high school career, but are happy she has decided to continue her track career with Eastern. She has already begun to connect with the school, as the EWU coaches have already begun to work with her.

“If she tells you she’s going to do something, you don’t doubt her or tell her she can’t,” said Toby. “You just get out of her way and support her the best you can.”

Maddy said she had really enjoyed her time at the high school and the opportunity she had to participate in three sports. She has been very grateful, especially for all the support her coaches have provided for her over the years to get her to this point.

“It’s definitely been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” she said. “I’ve so many friends and relationships that I’ll cherish forever and I’m going to miss being able to see all these people and all the coaches that I became really close with, but I’m excited for the next chapter.”

Maddy is still undecided on what she will major in but has a general idea of what classes she might want to pursue. She has mostly taken an interest in the medical field, law and exercise science.

“I’m just excited to compete at the next level and really push myself to achieve the goals that I have for myself and just continue to meet new people and make new relationships through track,” she said.

Along with track, Maddy Bond has also been a prominent player for the Mavs’ volleyball and basketball teams. It was a close choice, but she decided on track due to the connection she feels with the sport.
