PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint tennis dominates at 5A District 1-2 Championship

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 2 weeks AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 13, 2025 1:00 AM

TENNIS

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint High head coach Kent Anderson said it was probably the most dominant performance in Sandpoint High tennis' history, even with the inclusion of league foe Lewiston this year.

Senior Jacob Dawson and sophomore Pepper Rickert both defended their singles titles and the host Bulldogs came away with the boys and girls 5A Inland Empire League District 1-2 trophies after a successful outing at both the James E. Russell Sports Center and the courts at Travers Park this past Friday and Saturday.

Rickert, who is the defending 4A (now 5A) state champion and holds a 20-0 record on the season, cruised to the girls singles title, defeating teammate Bella Bailey in the championship match.

"Pepper marched through the tournament without giving up a game," coach Anderson said. "It was fun to see Pepper take on her close friend Bella in the championship match. They both hit so consistent. Pepper has the added weapon of incredible power when the opportunity arises, which is very hard to defend against."

Dawson, who is 15-2 on the season, also cruised to the boys singles title by winning every match in straight sets. He faced his teammate, junior Nathan Duke, in the championship match.

"He’s a level better this year compared to last year at this time," coach Anderson said of Dawson. "He took on his buddy Nathan in the finals, which was both a major challenge and a great warm-up for state for both."

Senior Aubrey Knowles, who won a district title in girls doubles in 2024 with then senior Sydney Webb, clinched her second straight title — this time with freshman Amelia Poulson. The two hold a perfect 15-0 regular season record on the year.

"Aubrey and Amelia found themselves in the finals playing their close teammates, Hannah (Fisher) and Lily (Evans). "It’s pretty hard to coach when all the players are from the same team, but it’s sure fun to watch. All four will be headed to state."

Sandpoint's girls won the team title with 71 points, 30 more than the runner-up Lady Bengals.

Brennan Johnson and Ethan Ballard added a second-place finish in boys doubles for Sandpoint's boys, which scored 63 points and defeated runner-up Lewiston by 29 points.

The 5A State Championship will be held this Friday and Saturday at Bishop Kelly High, Borah High and the Boise Racquet & Swim Club.
