Glacier Symphony is set to close its season with an awe-inspiring finale, “Pictures at an Exhibition,” on May 17-18 at the Wachholz College Center.

This spectacular program brings together two of the most celebrated Russian masterworks, transporting audiences through a musical art gallery and delivering one of the most powerful and beloved piano concertos of all time.

Returning to the Glacier Symphony stage is internationally acclaimed pianist Ilya Yakushev, a charismatic artist whose past performances have left audiences on their feet. Known for his fiery technique and magnetic stage presence, Yakushev will bring Tchaikovsky’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 1 to life — an electrifying piece recognized instantly by its bold, commanding opening chords.

"Ilya absolutely brought the house down the last time he played with us, and we are thrilled to welcome him back for this season’s finale," says Maestro John Zoltek, Music Director of Glacier Symphony. "Pairing Tchaikovsky’s famous concerto with Mussorgsky’s deeply evocative ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ makes for an unforgettable evening of musical storytelling and raw emotion."

Originally written as a suite for solo piano, Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by the work of his late friend, artist Viktor Hartmann. Mussorgsky composed the piece as a musical tour through an art gallery, capturing the emotions and imagery of Hartmann’s paintings. Later, French composer Maurice Ravel transformed it into the orchestral showpiece we know today, infusing it with rich colors, sweeping grandeur, and dazzling orchestration.

From the stately "Promenade" theme that recurs throughout the piece to the breathtaking climax of "The Great Gate of Kiev," this is music that paints vivid pictures in the listener’s mind. The Glacier Symphony’s full orchestral forces will bring these images to life, making this a sonic and emotional spectacle not to be missed.

Performances are May 17 at 7:30 p.m. and May 18 at 3 p.m. at the Wachholz College Center on the campus of Flathead Valley Community College.

A winner of the prestigious World Piano Competition, Russian pianist Ilya Yakushev has performed on some of the world’s greatest stages, including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, and the Great Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has appeared with leading orchestras across the U.S. and internationally, bringing a captivating energy and virtuosic brilliance to every performance.
