PREP TENNIS: Becker, Woelfle represent Badgers well at 4A District 1-2 Championship

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 15, 2025 1:00 AM
LEWISTON — Kaitlyn Becker booked her ticket to the 4A State Championship with a gritty performance.
The Bonners Ferry High freshman, after losing her opening match in a third-set tiebreaker, rattled off four straight wins to take third place in girls singles at the 4A District 1-2 championship held this past Friday and Saturday at Lewiston High.
Becker, who defeated Etta Corkill of Coeur d'Alene Charter by a score of 6-1, 6-1 in the third-place match will move on to state, which will be held this upcoming Friday and Saturday at both Ridgevue High and Owyhee High. John Becker served as Bonners Ferry High's interim coach at districts and will do the same for state.
Also competing for the Badgers at the district tournament was junior Daniel Woelfle, who just missed the final state qualifying spot with a sixth-place finish in boys singles. Woelfle won his opening round match against Coeur d'Alene Charter's Rapael Reynaud, the eventual third-place finisher, by a score of 6-4, 6-3 before falling in a pair of close matches.
Woelfle and Becker both found a way to co-op with Sandpoint's junior varsity team this season and are believed to be the first ever players to represent Bonners Ferry High at a district tennis tournament.
