STATE 6A BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Vikings drop opener, to face top-seeded Owyhee in loser-out game today

GARDEN CITY — Hunter Chambers drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth inning for third-seeded Coeur d’Alene, but an RBI single in the bottom of the inning by Caden McPherson was the difference as second-seeded Middleton won the state 6A championship series opener 6-5 at Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
Coeur d’Alene (18-6) will face top-seeded and three-time defending champion Owyhee (26-3) in a loser-out game in the four-team, double-elimination tournament today at 3 p.m. PDT. Mountain View, the fourth seed, beat Owyhee 9-1 in the other game on Thursday.
Middleton led 4-0 after the first inning on two-run singles by Beau Ramsey and Grady Churchfield.
Coeur d’Alene answered with an RBI single by Blake Foulk to score Bam Fenter in the top of the third. Jackson Hackett singled to score Harrison Trunkey-Evans in the fourth to make it 4-2.
After Middleton added a run in the fourth, Kolbe Coey cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fifth for Coeur d’Alene, scoring on a wild pitch, and Dylan Cook singled to score Gavin Helms to make it 5-4.
