STATE HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: A show in the south ... Max Cervi-Skinner, Post Falls' McKeown nab 6A titles

MERIDIAN — Earlier this year, Coeur d’Alene senior Max Cervi-Skinner wasn’t sure anymore. 

Injuries will do that to the best of athletes. 

Sure, he could still do some things, but others, well ... 

“I got pretty low for a while,” said Cervi-Skinner, who developed a pinched nerve in his left leg near his knee in early January. “I got super sick and it had been five months. I could still bike, ride the elliptical and swim, but I couldn’t run like I had been.” 

Cervi-Skinner was third at state in cross country as a senior, then ninth at the Nike Northwest Regional in November in Portland. 

Cervi-Skinner had only run the 3,200-meter run three times entering Friday’s state 6A track and field meet, winning twice and finishing third at the Oregon Relays. 

On Friday, feeling the best he’d felt in months, Cervi-Skinner ran away from the competition to win the event in 9 minutes, 1.59 seconds. 

Viking senior Zack Cervi-Skinner, Max's twin, was third (9:07.73) and sophomore Wyatt Carr fifth (9:13.41) in the event. 

“Zack and Wyatt hadn’t beaten me, but have been in practice,” Max Cervi-Skinner said. “It started to get to me mentally and it was a little hard to get through. But I knew if I kept working, it would come back around eventually.” 

Max Cervi-Skinner was runner-up as a junior, sixth as a sophomore and ninth as a freshman in the 3,200. 

“I’ve been building for this for a long time,” Max Cervi-Skinner said. “I’ve been in a lot of races and so close so many times. With 100 meters to go, I looked behind and saw the lead and couldn’t help but smile.” 

Later Friday, Coeur d'Alene took third place in the boys 4x800 relay. Max Cervi-Skinner, Wyatt Carr, Zack Cervi-Skinner and Mitchell Rietze finished in a school-record time of 7 minutes, 44.25 seconds. They broke the previous record of 7:49.96, set by Max and Zack Cervi-Skinner, Jacob King and Lachlan May.

Post Falls senior Isaac McKeown is well known for letting it fly around a football stadium, spending the last three years as the Trojans starting quarterback. 

On Friday at Mountain View, McKeown put on a show in another sport. 

McKeown won the state 6A title in the javelin — the first time the event has been held at the state meet — with a throw of 169 feet, 6 inches on his third of six throws.

“It felt great,” said McKeown, who has signed to play football at NAIA Arizona Christian next fall. “My coaches really got me going beforehand. I just trusted my technique and let it fly. It almost felt like a Hail Mary. It’s a pretty fun event. I had a lot of fun this year.” 

“He’s made a really huge jump in the last three meets from 145 feet to the 160s consistently,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “He’s just constantly gotten better this year. It’s a really big deal for him to do this.” 

Coeur d'Alene senior Kelsey Carroll finished runner-up in the girls shot put with a throw of 38 feet. Lake City sophomore Courtney Johnson was seventh (34-10).

Coeur d'Alene's girls were sixth in the 4x800 relay.

Rocky Mountain (boys) and Capital of Boise (girls) lead the team standings through six events.

In 5A, Lakeland senior Ben Roth finished runner-up in the boys high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 4 inches.

Hawk sophomore Jackie Robbins was third in the girls discus with a throw of 127 feet.

In 4A, Timberlake's boys sprint medley team of Nicholas Rostege, Ethan Applegate, Cody Clemons and Jonathan Barnhart won in 3:38.29. 

Caleb Royce of Timberlake was fourth in the 3,200.

Coeur d'Alene Charter senior Helen Oyler won the girls 3,200 in 11:26.81, followed by Timberlake's Vanessa McLachlan in second (11:35.51) and Lola Eggleston in fifth.

The Charter girls took second in the sprint medley relay.

Emily Lewis of Timberlake was third in the discus.

St. Maries senior Julien Ceja-Grimaldo won the state 3A boys triple jump with a jump of 44 feet, 9 1/2 inches. He also placed second in the long jump.

Zackary Sotin of St. Maries was sixth in the discus.

Davin Harju of Kellogg took fourth in the high jump.

Meijah Yearout of St. Maries was fifth in the 3A girls discus.

Dimerica Spooner of St. Maries took third in the javelin and tied for sixth in the high jump.

Julian Davis of Wallace was third in the 2A boys high jump. 

Tyla Dittman of Kootenai finished sixth in the 2A girls pole vault.
