STATE HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: A protest, patience and a new Ruelle in 5A
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 7 months, 1 week AGO
5A
Some kids celebrated state titles with a nice dinner somewhere.
Lakeland sophomore Sapphire Ruelle took in a show after putting on own of her own in the state 5A 100- and 200-meter dash on Saturday.
Ruelle won the 100 in 12.57 seconds, then won the 200 in 25.79.
"I was really nervous going into both races,” said Ruelle, who beat Hallie Burton of Idaho Falls by .2 seconds in the 100. “The girl from Idaho Falls was right next to me and I thought at first that she’d won.”
Ruelle clipped Burton again in the 200.
Ruelle was fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200 as a freshman.
“In the 200, I felt like I’d had the lead most of the way,” Ruelle said. “I’ve been working a lot harder this year. I barely made it to the podium last year and once I saw the times going into this weekend, I felt more at ease.”
After the meet on Saturday, Ruelle watched her cousin perform in the Canyon County Symphony’s spring concert at the College of Idaho in Caldwell.
“It was a really busy weekend, but really glad I was able to get through it,” Ruelle said.
Karstyn Kiefer finished second in the 300 hurdles and Lakeland’s Jackie Robbins was third in the shot put.
Lakeland’s Brayden Carrel was fifth in the shot put.
Sandpoint’s Maverick Gomez won the 200 in 21.94 seconds and fellow Bulldog Van Lee was second in the pole vault.
Jetta Thaete of Sandpoint won the 5A girls javelin with a toss of 138-10.
Moscow won its first girls team title since 2006, finishing with 95 points. Bishop Kelly of Boise won its fifth straight boys team title.
6A: Post Falls seniors Giovanni Carlino, Trenton McLean, Tallan McCracken and Cobe Cameron had one goal for this weekend.
They accomplished it, though it doesn’t look that way in the final standings.
The team thought it had set an overall state meet record in the 4x400-meter relay in 3 minutes, 18.33 seconds to win the 6A race — the final event of the weekend.
However, the Trojans were disqualified after meet officials ruled that a Trojan runner had impeded the path of a Kuna runner. Timberline won the race, also in a record time of 3:18.63, followed by Kuna.
“The kids all year thought we could set the overall state record, and they did that,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “But the flag went up and they said we impeded a runner, but that’s not the way we saw it. I wrote up a protest and there was nothing we could do. It just wasn’t the way we saw it, but it doesn’t take away from what our kids did, because it was a phenomenal effort. Cobe had taken the lead at the 150 mark, and it looked like the Kuna kid pushed him, and we got DQ’d. There’s really not much we can do about it.”
Post Falls senior Chloe Van Volkinburg, who has signed with Spokane Colleges to run track and field, finished third in the 400 and seventh in the 200. The Trojans 4x200 boys (1:27.56) and girls (1:42.66) relay teams also set school records. The Trojan girls 4x400 relay team of Reagan Hutchinson, Trinity Byrne, Annabelle Tucker and Van Volkinburg was second in 4:00.85.
“Everyone performed really well,” said Quesnell, who is retiring as coach after this season. “It’s kind of bad that it ended on that note, but it doesn’t take away from what they accomplished.”
Coeur d'Alene senior Kimberlee Priebe won the state 6A high jump title with a jump of 5 feet, 6 inches.
Lake City's boys 4x100 relay team of Chase Young, Boston Shull, Britton Johnson and Caden Tony finished fourth in 42.74.
Mitchell Rietze of Coeur d'Alene was fourth in the 1,600, followed by teammate Max Cervi-Skinner in seventh in the event.
4A: On Friday, Timberlake sophomore Jonathan Barnhart crossed the finish line to clinch a win for the Tigers in the boys state 4A medley relay.
“That was probably my worst race I’ve had,” Barnhart said. “It was probably the most pain I’ve felt.”
Saturday, it was a different kind of feeling that took over as he crossed the finish line to win the 4A 800 in 1 minute, 55.52 seconds.
Barnhart took his time out of the start with the idea of finishing strong.
“I noticed a couple of guys took off right away,” Barnhart said. “Jacob (Mascheroni) from McCall-Donnelly got out to a lead and Ethan (Poff) from Kimberly stayed right behind him. My goal was to stay behind (Ethan) until the last 100 meters, then just decided to leave everything on the track. It was a fun race and I’m glad I still had a little left in the tank.”
Poff finished second in 1:56.04.
“I’d heard from some other people his strategy was to stay behind me,” Barnhart said. “I knew that if I was going to take the lead, he’d pass me, so I just decided to stay behind him for the last 100 meters.”
Barnhart, along with teammates Nicholas Rostege, Cody Clemons and Ethan Applegate finished fifth in the 4x400 relay. The Timberlake girls 4x200 relay team of Maicie Archer, Amarijana Olivieri, Jozee MacArthur and Adelynn Archer finished third in 1:48.51.
Sugar-Salem won the boys team title, with Kimberly winning the girls title with 110 points.
Reagan Meine (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4x400 relay), Annabelle Carr (800, 1,600, 4x400 relay) nabbed titles for the Panthers, who finished second with 101 points. Emmaline Carr was second in the 100, 200 individually. Diana Nelson of Timberlake was fourth in the high jump.
3A: St. Maries senior Julien Ceja-Grimaldo won the boys title in the javelin with a throw of 170 feet, 6 inches, with Kellogg's Porter Lewis finishing fourth (141-9).
Raevyn Yearout was fourth in the 100, 200 and 400 for the St. Maries girls.
Brayden Lamanna of Priest River finished second in the 1,600 and the school's 4x200 relay team of Carter Korff, Ian Lamanna, Luccas Simcox and Kashas Wright was fourth. Ian Lamanna tied for fifth in the pole vault.
2A: Logos of Moscow swept team titles.
