The importance of elections to our local business community

As our region continues to grow and evolve, one truth remains constant: the strength of our local economy depends on the strength of our core community services — most notably, public education and public safety. From preparing tomorrow’s workforce to protecting lives and property, our schools and first responders form the foundation of a thriving business climate. That’s why the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber is calling on the entire business community to step up and vote in favor of the local school district levies and the Coeur d’Alene Firefighters Bond Initiative on the May 20 ballot. 

This is not just a civic duty — it’s a business imperative. 

Education and workforce development: A smart investment 

From advanced manufacturing and healthcare to hospitality and technology, nearly every industry in Kootenai County relies on a well-educated, job-ready workforce. That pipeline starts in our public schools. It’s where students build the critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills that employers value. It's also where students gain exposure to career readiness programs, technical training and college pathways. 

Strong schools mean strong employees, and strong local talent reduces recruitment costs, strengthens community ties and keeps our economy moving forward. 

The proposed levies in Lakeland Joint School District No. 272, Post Falls School District No. 273 and Plummer-Worley School District No. 44 are not about luxuries. They are essential renewals — not new taxes — that fund school safety, staffing, classroom supplies, extracurricular programs, technology access and more. Without them, all districts face significant cuts that will impact learning outcomes — and, by extension, the future of our local workforce. 

Public safety: The backbone of a resilient economy 

Equally important to a thriving community — and a prosperous business environment — is public safety. This May, Coeur d’Alene voters will also decide on a Firefighters Bond Initiative that directly affects the health, safety and emergency preparedness of our city. 

As businesses expand and our population grows, our fire and emergency services must be equipped to respond quickly and effectively. Whether it’s ensuring fast emergency medical response, fire protection for homes and businesses, or disaster readiness, investing in our fire department is investing in a safe, stable environment where businesses can thrive. 

The proposed bond supports critical infrastructure improvements, updated equipment and staffing needed to meet increasing service demands. It’s a strategic investment in a future where public safety keeps pace with economic development.

This election season, we urge business leaders and citizens across the region to take action. The outcome of these measures will shape the future of our workforce, the safety of our community and the vitality of our economy. 

We need the business community to show up en masse to vote in favor of these crucial levies and bond measures. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a large employer, a local retailer or an employee, these decisions impact your ability to operate, grow and succeed.
