PREP TRACK & FIELD: Seven area school records fall, three local athletes crowned state champions

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 1 week AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 19, 2025 8:00 PM

Thaete, Gomez pick up state titles

MERIDIAN — Jetta Thaete can officially say she's undefeated in the javelin throw.

In the event's first year of being officially sanctioned by the Idaho High School Activities Association, the Sandpoint High junior threw a new personal best of 138 feet, 10 inches, over six-and-a-half feet further than her own school record (132 feet, 3 inches) and 21 feet further than the next-best competitor, to capture an individual state title at the 5A State Championship held Friday and Saturday at Mountain View High.

Her winning mark wasn't just No. 1 in the state of Idaho this year, it also ranks as No. 40 amongst the entire nation. She finishes the 2025 campaign having won the javelin in 10 straight meets.

Junior Maverick Gomez also captured a state title for the Bulldogs, winning the 200-meter dash in a new school record time of 21.94 seconds, .24 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The previous record of 22.00 seconds was set at the 1997 state meet by Caleb Bowman. It was a huge comeback for Gomez, who ran to a new personal best time of 10.80 seconds, which ranks as No. 2 in school history, in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash on day one — but was disqualified during the finals on day two.

Senior Van Lee added a second-place finish in the pole vault with a new personal best clear of 14 feet even, which ranks as No. 4 all-time in school history. Sandpoint High sophomore Damian Porter rounded out the boys' top finishes, grabbing a bronze medal in the discus throw with a toss of 144 feet, 4 inches. Junior Matthew Kunde was sixth in the event with a new personal best mark of 139 feet, 8 inches for the Bulldogs, which finished 11th out of 24 scoring teams.

On the girls' side, senior Noah Roark was sixth in the high jump (5 feet even), junior Ani Vick was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (48.11 seconds), and junior Izzy Davidson was sixth in the pole vault (9 feet, 6 inches) for the Lady Bulldogs, which finished tied for 15th out of 24 scoring teams.

Smith wins state title, Lamanna apart of three broken records

MIDDLETON — Chase Smith is the first official javelin state champion in Idaho's 3A classification.

The Priest River High junior launched a new school record throw of 114 feet even, exactly one foot further than her own school record and over six feet further than the next-best competitor, at the 3A State Championship held Friday and Saturday at Middleton High.

Smith is the first girl to win a state championship for Priest River in any event since 2008, when the Lady Spartans won four titles — then senior Lacy Hopkins won the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash and Priest River won both the 4x400 and 800-meter sprint medley relays.

Spokane CC commit Kylee Swoboda tied her own personal best of 5 feet even and placed fourth in the high jump after not clearing a jump a year ago for the Lady Spartans, which placed tied for 13th out of 20 scoring teams, their best finish since 2014.

For the boys, Priest River High senior and Treasure Valley CC commit Brayden Lamanna capped off his tremendous distance career, finishing as the 3A State Runner-up in both the 3200-meter run (9:29.88) and the 1600-meter run (4:23.53), both of which are new school records by roughly six seconds.

Lamanna then combined with senior Carter Korff, senior Luccas Simcox and his brother, junior Ian Lamanna, to break the school record in the 1600-meter sprint medley relay, placing fifth with a time of 3:41.86. The previous record of 3:42.40 was held by Ian Wood, Kyle York, Nathan Ackley and Lance Clark, set in 1994.

Junior Niki Porinchok broke the fifth Priest River High school record of the meet, throwing a new personal best of 158 feet, 5 inches in the discus to place third in the event. The previous record of 157 feet, 11 inches was held by 2023 graduate turned University of Idaho defensive end, Matyus McLain.

Korff contributed sixth-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (23.70 seconds) and long jump (20 feet, 2 inches) and led off Priest River's fourth-place 4x200 relay (1:34.83), which included Ian Lammana, who placed fifth in the pole vault (12 feet even), Simcox and Kashas Wright, to round out the Spartans' top finishes.

Priest River's boys placed seventh out of 21 scoring teams, their best finish since 1991.
