Local mountain bikers ready for state competition

SANDPOINT — The Kootenai Composite, a mountain biking team based in Coeur d'Alene that hosts Sandpoint athletes for their spring season, recently put up a pair of stellar performances at races in Leavenworth and Winthrop, Wash.
On the weekend of Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, the team finished second overall out of 14 teams in the High School Boys 1 division at the Thrill at Ski Hill race in Leavenworth. This past Sunday, May 18, the team continued to rack up podium finishes, also finishing second out of 14 teams in the High School Boys 1 division at the Methow Classic held at Liberty Bell High in the Winthrop.
Racing in the Washington Student Cycling League, the Kootenai Composite is currently ranked second out of 28 teams in the Division I High School standings.
Seven area students have qualified for the prestigious state championship race, which will be held Sunday, June 1, at 360 Trails in Gig Harbor, Wash.
Representing the boys are Trent Roberts (Varsity division), Raul Diniz (High School Boys 2), Roman Presta (High School Boys 1), Noah Schroder (High School Boys 2) and Miles Burns (Seventh Grade). Representing the girls are Zoe Honsinger (High School Girls 2) and Avani Schroder (Eighth Grade).

The Sandpoint Trailblazers mountain biking team is welcoming new riders from sixth to 12th grade for the upcoming fall season. Preseason rides kick off in June — perfect for students to try it out before committing. Official practices begin around July 1.
