Glacier National Park plow crews have punched through the Big Drift and were working on removing snow at the Logan Pass visitor center on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, park spokeswoman Gina Icenoggle said Friday.
Snow depths around the center were about 12 feet deep. The bathroom building showed just its roof earlier this week.
The road still needs to be widened through drifts, and crews need to install log guardrails and remove rocks from the road before the Sun Road can open to the public.
“Still lots to do before the road can open,” Icenoggle noted.
The road this weekend is open to hikers and bikers on the west side to Big Bend, about 3 miles from the pass. On the east side, the road closed at No Stump Point.
The road to Kintla Lake and the Kintla Lake campground is now open.
Most other park secondary roads are now open for the season as well.
This weekend is supposed to be warm and sunny, with a chance of thunderstorms later Sunday.
