Ila Showen Russell, a beloved grandmother, mother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Rio Rancho, N.M., on May 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on Dec. 29, 1936, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Ila was the cherished daughter of Elma and LaRue Showen. She lived a life rich with love, compassion and creativity that touched the hearts of all who knew her.

Ila is preceded in death by both her parents, her brother, John, and her beloved husband, Roy Russell, to whom she was married July 21, 1955. Together, they shared many wonderful years, building a family and creating lasting memories. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of her surviving family members, including her sister, Lois Holom of Spokane, Wash., and her two daughters, Danette Bettesworth of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Lori Miller of Lincoln City, Ore. She also leaves behind an adoring legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry her love forward.

Professionally, Ila was a dedicated operations manager and office manager for several Federal Savings and Loan companies, as well as a collections and office manager for a neurosurgeon in New Mexico. Her strong work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in all her endeavors. Yet, it was her kindness and warmth that truly defined her.

A woman of faith, Ila was an active member of her Baptist Church, where she often served as a substitute piano player. Her love for music and connection to her community were integral parts of her life. Ila had a deep appreciation for the arts, particularly painting with watercolors. She found joy in preparing delicious meals for her friends and family, sharing her culinary creations with an open heart.

Known for her compassionate nature, Ila loved and was loved by everyone she met, especially children. Her gentle spirit and infectious laughter created an atmosphere of warmth and acceptance wherever she went. She made everyone feel special, and her legacy of love will forever resonate in the lives she touched.

Ila left this world to be in the presence of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior, after a courageous battle with dementia. We are grateful for the years we shared and the memories we created together. Her passing, though heartbreaking, brings us comfort in knowing she is at peace.

A private funeral service will be held to honor Ila's life and legacy. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to her doctors and hospice caregivers, whose compassion and support made her final days more comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness in Ila's memory, reflecting the love she so freely gave throughout her life. Ila Russell will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
