It was a beautiful sunny Saturday in the Mission Valley with the lot behind Pablo elementary a bit louder than one might expect on a weekend afternoon.

The commotion was thanks to a fresh skate park located on Pablo West Road and tons of tunes blasting out new and old hits. The new park also features two bowls which drew skaters of all ages and skill levels to the event.

It wasn’t just skaters who were present for the grand opening; people rode bikes, roller skates, and scooters to go along with skateboarders doing tricks and breaking in the new park. Adults and kids alike shared smiles and even taught each other some moves.

This new community space was made possible thanks to a collaborative effort between Montana Pool Service, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Evergreen Skateparks, and Montana Skatepark.

In a press release, CSKT councilman Martin Charlo called the park “a testament to what can be achieved when communities and organizations come together."

Also in attendance were representatives of the Montana Skateboard Association. The organization was handing out gear like helmets, knee pads, and boards along with shirts and hats.

A representative from the organization offered a simple but resonant response to the importance of parks and skating.

“Skateboarding saves kids' lives ... this is what kids need,” he said while handing out gear to the sea of local youth.

Saturday’s celebration was bursting with energy and smiles, with food provided by Cheers Etcetera, and tunes from DJ Foreshadow and Salish Drum. Thanks to the park, local skaters now have a space in Pablo to do tricks, hang out with friends and create lasting bonds.
