Time to act for SNAP
The Western News | UPDATED 5 months AGO
SNAP benefits will stop tomorrow unless the Republicans in the Senate suspend the Filibuster Rule as I just heard on the radio that Pres. Trump is now requesting.
Gov. Gianforte has state money that would alleviate the distress of people who will lose SNAP benefits if the Republicans don't adjust the Filibuster Rule.
But, the Governor, like Senate Republicans, cares more about blaming the Democrats for the government shutdown than the welfare of the people of Montana who need food assistance - and the farms and businesses that benefit by use of SNAP benefits.
Again, the Senate Republicans could have avoided or ended the Government shutdown any time they wanted to by suspending the Filibuster Rule.
The REAL issue is that the Republican BBB bill which passed earlier this year, made permanent tax cuts that primarily benefit the wealthiest people in the U.S. But, that bill eliminated the tax credits that helped make Health Insurance more affordable for lower income Americans.
Democrats are the minority in Congress. They could NOT stop the BBB without some Republican opposition. The ONLY way the Democrats could show their opposition to this injustice was NOT to vote for the Continuing Resolution (CR), which, as long as the Filibuster Rule was in place, the Republicans could not pass without some Democratic support.
Again, the Republicans in the Senate did/does have the votes required to suspend the Filibuster Rule. They COULD have avoided and CAN END the Government Shutdown any time they so choose. Instead of governing in a way that takes into account the welfare of the majority of the people of;P

P.S. The Republicans would not have had to eliminate those tax cuts for the wealthiest taxpayers. If they had just shaved a few percentage points off the tax cuts for the very wealthiest, they would not have needed to let the Health Insurance credits expire or reduce other programs that benefit the majority of Americans.
