MIKE MAYNARD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 month AGO
MOSES LAKE – October football has concluded, and several Washington college football teams are looking to take the next step in the last leg of the season. Some stumbled in week 10 while some get rest up on a bye week. See below how your favorite teams fared over the weekend and their current record.
WSU (4-5) at Oregon State
The Cougars came up short in a defensive tug-of-war against Oregon State. According to a statement by WSU athletics, the Cougars controlled much of the first half and took a 7–3 lead into the break after sophomore running back Kirby Vorhees punched in a three-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter. WSU's 75-yard scoring drive was highlighted by efficient passing from senior quarterback Zevi Eckhaus and timely runs from the Cougar backfield.
Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter. Oregon State was able to pull away in the fourth quarter with a touchdown to take a 10-7 lead and win the game. Eckhaus finished 13 of 24 for 146 yards through the air while adding 24 yards on the ground. Vorhees led the WSU rushing attack with 46 yards on 10 carries. Senior receiver Joshua Meredith added four catches for 44 yards.
“Obviously, a disappointing loss, the penalties killed us. Defensively, we played good enough to win the game and just didn’t, so we’re going to have to find a way to address those things and go into this bye week and get healthy,” head coach Jimmy Rogers said.
The Cougars have another bye week this week, but return to the field Nov. 15 to host Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m.

Eastern Washington (4-5) vs Sacramento State
The Eagles' three-game win streak was halted at Roos Field after losing 35-13 to Sacramento State and suffering their fifth loss of the season, according to a statement by EWU athletics.
Sacramento St. rushed for 376 yards, averaging 6.7 yards per carry. The Hornets' defense stifled the Eagles, holding them to 38 rushing yards and 240 total yards. The first quarter was full of action, as the teams combined for 24 points, while Eastern forced two turnovers. The Hornets led by four after one but scored 14 points in the second quarter to build an 18-point lead. Sacramento St.'s defense shut out the Eagles in the second half to secure the win.
“We have to find what continues to work for us,” head coach Aaron Best said. “They kept us behind the sticks, and we have to get the run game going. We protected better than we did, especially with passing late. We did a pretty good job for two-and-a-half, three-quarters protecting up front. But we just have to be better in passing and rushing situations to be more balanced.”
Jake Schakel replaced Nate Bell in the second quarter due to injury. Schakel completed 24-of-35, good enough for a 68.5% completion rate and for 201 yards passing. Eastern Washington has now recorded an interception in seven consecutive games after Jonathan Landry made his first career pick. The streak matches the longest streak since 2018. The Eagles' defense also recovered two fumbles.
The Eagles hit the road to face the third-ranked University of Montana Grizzlies on Nov. 8 at noon Pacific.

U. of Washington (6-2) - Bye week

The Huskies will look to build on that momentum Nov. 8 when they travel to Camp-Randall Stadium to face the Wisconsin Badgers at 1:30 p.m. Pacific.
Central Washington (8-1) vs Angelo State
The Wildcats extended their win streak to seven straight after defeating the Rams 38-21 at home in a ranked matchup. Head coach Chris Fisk said he is excited for the win but is still focused on the next game.
“We are very proud of the energy, enthusiasm, and execution that we played with tonight. This is a big win for our program. I'm very excited for our kids. We will celebrate this one tonight and then shift all of our focus to Sul Ross tomorrow,” he said.
They jumped out to a 28-7 lead at halftime. The Rams came out in the third quarter and cut the 21-point deficit to one score at 28-21. Wahluke falls to Tri-Cities in home opener
MATTAWA — The Wahluke Warriors (0-1) were defeated 46-24 in their home opener by the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars. Despite the loss, Head Coach Makai Hirai said he was proud of the effort his players gave on the court. “That was the biggest thing that I took away is we had a lot of effort. We have a lot of girls who are hungry, and the coaches were excited about (that). Our girls look pretty motivated ... they’re working hard,” Hirai said. The Jaguars started fast and held the lead the entire game. Tri-Cities Prep put up double-digit scores in each quarter except for the third. The Warriors finished strong with 10 points in the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars came out victorious.
From overtime thriller to championship stage
The Knights meet Cashmere once again
ROYAL CITY — On Friday, the No. 1 seed Royal Knights (12-0) will travel to Husky Stadium to play the No. 2 seed Cashmere Bulldogs (11-1) in the 1A state championship game. The Knights Head Coach Wiley Allred was not surprised to see the Bulldogs reach the state championship game. “I was hoping there wasn't a team better than them, because that's a pretty tough team right there. We'll meet our match,” Allred said. When these two met in October, it was the Knights pulling off a late comeback to win 21-15 in overtime. Coming into that game, both teams were undefeated. The Knights had only allowed seven points all season, while the Bulldogs had not allowed a score by any team.
Warriors fall short in home opener
MATTAWA — The Wahluke Warriors (0-1) were defeated 67-43 by the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars Tuesday in their return to the hardwood. Wahluke Head Coach Anfernee Cortez said some of the loss may be attributed to first-game jitters. “We started too flat and just kind of dug ourselves into a hole early. Against a team like Tri-Cities Prep, it’s tough to catch up at that point,” Cortez said. A slow start by the Warriors allowed Tri-Cities Prep to take hold of the momentum early and build a commanding lead. In the first half, the Warriors struggled to knock down shots and attack the rim. The Jaguars carried their momentum into the second half to run away with the game. Wahluke had a stronger second-half showing, but Cortez said it was not enough to get back in the game.
