Eddie Belakiewicz has seen a lot in his century of life.

The Boundary County man recently celebrated his birthday a day early on Oct. 24 at the Community Restorium. His actual birthday was Oct. 25, the same day as the Restorium’s anniversary carnival celebrating its 50 years of existence.

Belakiewicz, a World War II Navy veteran, is Boundary County’s oldest living veteran. Originally from Chicago, Belakiewicz is a long-time fan of the Chicago Bears.

Several friends and fellow veterans visited the Restorium to commemorate Belakiewicz’s milestone birthday.

A man full of laughter, Belakiewicz reflected four days after his party on the significance, or lack thereof, of turning 100.

“It’s just another day,” he said. “You have a few more gray hairs. I’ve had a pretty good life. I can’t complain.”

Belakiewicz took his time answering most questions, except when he was asked about the happiest day of his life.

“My wedding,” he said.

Belakiewicz was married for 46 years.

“You had your good days, and you had your bad days,” he said with a laugh.

He said he treasured the relationships with his family, including his in-laws, who he joked, “always have information for you.”

Before he worked 32 years in a shipyard, he served in the Navy for four years — something he admits he didn’t always enjoy.

“I hated it,” Belakiewicz said. “Sometimes you’re working in the kitchen, you’re washing the dishes. I made a few friends, but none that I would really care to associate with. They would always get drunk.”

Now living at the Restorium, Belakiewicz is grateful for the community where he now lives.

“The people here are pretty decent,” he said in an understatement
