After 22 years on the Coeur d'Alene Public Library board of trustees, Steve McCrea resigned Sept. 19.

Two people are vying to replace him. They are Mike Gridley, retired city attorney, and Megan Dardis-Kunz, clinical assistant professor with Boise State University in Coeur d'Alene.

They were among 13 candidates considered for the board in 2023 when Fay Sweney resigned after serving since 1981.

Elizabeth Westenburg, library director, said both applicants were reviewed and a recommendation went to Mayor Woody McEvers, who in turn will make a recommendation to the City Council, which will vote on it.

Whoever lands the seat will be part of decisions that affect library operations. It is for a five-year term, which can be reappointed. 

The opening was posted under "volunteer opportunities" on the city's website. The application deadline was Oct. 20.

In a support letter, former Coeur d'Alene mayor Steve Widmyer wrote that Gridley served more than 20 years as the city attorney.

"Mike demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and integrity," Widmyer said. "Mike genuinely cares about what is best for our community, and he would be an excellent addition to your board."

In a Sept. 29 letter, Councilman Dan English supported Dardis-Kunz. He said he has known her for years as a friend, colleague and "engaged community member."

"She is very compassionate and yet willing to step into the fray as needed to be an advocate for those who may not have a voice, but sometimes for the worse, are impacted by community decision makers."

The current library board includes Jim Windisch, chair, appointed in 2020; Ruth Pratt, vice chair, appointed in 2024; Melisa Carper-Bell, appointed in 2023; and Katie Sayler, appointed in 1986,

The City Council may consider McEvers' recommendation at its next meeting.
