MURRIETA, Calif. — Sandpoint’s Carter Happell, 16 years old, has officially signed an amateur development rider contract with Grindstone Compound, one of the nation’s top motocross training facilities.
Happell, who wears the number 88, competes in the 250C, Schoolboy 2, and Open C classes and has been steadily building a name for himself on the track. His signing with Grindstone marks the next step in his racing journey, offering him professional-level training and the opportunity to compete on the national level.
Grindstone recently announced its newly launched developmental program debuting in 2026, which features two developmental riders alongside two elite riders. The goal of the program is to build a pathway that grows stronger each year, giving young athletes the resources and guidance they need to progress from the amateur ranks toward the professional level.
“Working with Carter over the past year, we’ve seen that his work ethic mirrors Grindstone’s core values and what we look for in athletes,” said owner and trainer Cari Schehr, the only female team owner in Supercross. “We’re excited to give Carter the opportunity to continue building confidence and to work with him for another season as he pursues his goals.”
Happell said he's been dreaming of this moment for a long time.
“To be able to train with some of the best riders and coaches in the country is an incredible opportunity, and I’m excited to see how far I can go," Happell said.
Happell has been racing dirt bikes since he was young and has already qualified for major events, with his sights set on Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Motocross National Championships, also known as the The Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships, which is held annually in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. The race is known as the world's largest amateur motocross race and is usually the final stop for amateurs before they join the professional ranks.
Happell's work ethic and dedication have earned him the support of family, friends, and local sponsors who are cheering him on every step of the way. His family says they are proud to see his hard work paying off, and hope the community will continue to follow his journey as he represents North Idaho on the national motocross stage.
Happell would like to thank the Sandpoint businesses who have supported him along the way, including H&S Unlimited, Guardian Fence & Development, Lawnco, Pacific Steel Ponderay, JNW Concrete, and Big Nick’s Tree Management. Their generosity and encouragement have helped make this next step possible.
