Moses Lake boy’s food drive takes off for second year

MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake boy is holding his own holiday food drive in conjunction with Care Moses Lake, according to an announcement from Care Moses Lake founder Michaelle Boetger.
Last year, Weston Wesselman, 8, put up a container and a sign asking for food donations outside his family’s Christmas light display at their home on Cove West Drive, according to the announcement. Care Moses Lake distributed the donations, and the Wesselman family took the opportunity to volunteer with the organization, putting together sack lunches and snack packs for local people in need.
This year, Weston will repeat his food drive, this time collecting snack items for local children, according to the announcement.
“I love seeing my son’s eyes light up when he checks the food bin and finds new donations,” Weston’s mom, Tessa Wesselman, said. “He gets so excited knowing people are helping. He loves being able to personally receive donations from community members and say ‘Thank you’ himself. On the weekends, he even stands outside on the sidewalk handing out candy canes to people who drive by to see the lights.”
Care Moses Lake assembles 160 Care Snack Bags every week, which are then distributed to eight Moses Lake schools for children in need, Boetger wrote in the announcement.
“Each Care Snack bag contains a salty (individual chips, popcorn or crackers), a sweet (granola bar or krispie treat) and a cup (jello, pudding, fruit or applesauce), plus a spoon,” Boetger wrote.
Donations will be collected at the Wesselman home, 4225 Cove West Drive, according to the announcement, as well as at three locations around Moses Lake.
“We love it when young people give back to our community,” Boetger wrote. We hope others see what Weston has started and can think of ways they, too, can give back to those in need in our community.”
Besides the Wesselman home, donations can be dropped off at:
Movement Mortgage, 420 West Broadway
PowerNet of Grant County, 220 S. Ash
Cobie’s Fine Dry Cleaning, 520 W. Valley Road, Ste. A
