CAMBRIDGE — Once Wallace ran out of answers on Saturday, Tri-Valley took the Miners out of the running for their first appearance in a state championship game since 1986.

Wallace, in the state semifinals for the first time since 2011, fell to the Tri-Valley Titans 78-54 in a state 1A semifinal at Cambridge Elementary School, finishing the season 9-3.

Tri-Valley (9-2), a co-op between Cambridge and Midvale high schools, will face Carey, a 32-26 winner over Council in the other semifinal on Saturday, in the championship game next Saturday at Middleton High.

After falling behind 6-0, Wallace tied the game at 6-6 on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Miller to Lennox Radford less than four minutes into the game. Miller also connected with senior Gus Scott on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 14-12 after the first quarter.

Wallace took its first lead of the day on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Miller to junior Henry Larson. Tri-Valley outscored Wallace 30-22 in the second quarter to take a 44-34 halftime lead, then outscored the Miners 14-0 in the third quarter to build a 58-34 lead after three quarters.

Miller threw for 364 yards and six touchdowns, and also ran for a 75-yard score for Wallace. Radford had 10 catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard kickoff return just before halftime to cut it to 44-34 Tri-Valley.

Scott had seven receptions for 96 yards for Wallace, which graduates two seniors from this year’s team.

Tri-Valley senior quarterback Jace Waggoner ran for 317 yards and four touchdowns. The senior also had an interception and onside kick recovery to set up a Titan score late in the third quarter.
