COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Thompson named College of the Siskiyous Female Athlete of the Month

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 4 weeks AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | November 19, 2025 12:25 PM

Cheyenne Thompson, College of the Siskiyous Soccer

A 2024 graduate of Priest River High, Cheyenne, a sophomore midfielder, was recently named the Eagle Female Athlete of the Month for her two goals in recent games against Gavilan and the College of the Redwoods. In an article written by the College of the Siskiyous Sports Information Department, the former Lady Spartan standout "has been a reliable and consistent player for the Eagles, and her efforts show more than through a stat sheet." The article also states that Thompson, who has started two games and has seen action in 17 others this season, is a model student in the classroom, and her hard work and dedication to the soccer program has not gone unnoticed. Thompson was also recently celebrated in a Sophomore Day game against Butte College, which was the team's regular-season finale and resulted in a 1-1 tie. The No. 23 College of the Siskiyous (10-7-1) will face No. 10 Butte again in the first round of the 3C2A NorCal Regional Playoffs on Nov. 19 at Chico State Soccer Stadium.

Thomas Bateman, Treasure Valley CC Basketball

A 2025 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Thomas, a 6-foot-5-inch freshman forward, scored six points (2-5 FG, 2-2 FT) and hauled in five rebounds, three of which were offensive, and chipped in an assist and a steal across 16 minutes off the bench in a recent game against Diablo Valley College (W 88-77) — the first win of the 2025-2026 campaign for the Chukars. In the team's season-opening game against Umpqua CC (L 86-81), the former three-time All-Intermountain League recipient saw 21 minutes of action and buried a three-pointer for his first three career points, also adding a rebound, a steal, and a block in the contest. Treasure Valley (1-1) will return to action at Utah State Eastern for the Thanksgiving Eagle Classic set to be held Nov. 28 and Nov. 29.

Kylie Burnett, St. Lawrence University Soccer

A 2022 graduate of Shattuck-St. Mary's (Faribault, Minn.) who also played soccer for Sandpoint High, Kylie was recently named to the Liberty League Fall All-Academic Team. To achieve such a distinction, a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing and enrolled full-time with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30. The former Lady Bulldog standout finished her career with 2,319 minutes played across 47 games played, 28 of which she started; 19 shots, seven of which were on goal; and one career assist for St. Lawrence, which finished their season with a record of 8-7-3.

Asher Williams, Montana Tech University Basketball

A 2025 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Asher, a 6-foot-6-inch freshman guard, recorded seven points (2-6 FG, 2-5 FT), including his fourth three-pointer of the year, and a season-high three rebounds across 13 minutes of action in a recent game against Northwest University (W 90-73). The former four-time All-Intermountain League pick also had two points and an assist in recent games against Lewis-Clark State (83-70) and Ottawa University of Ariz. (W 76-68) for Montana Tech (6-0), which will look to remain undefeated when they travel to Mayville State on Nov. 21 and Valley City State on Nov. 22 to start Frontier Conference play.

Matyus McLain, University of Idaho Football

A 2023 graduate of Priest River High, Matyus, a 6-foot-4-inch redshirt sophomore defensive end, had five total tackles, including a 5-yard sack in the second quarter of the Vandals' recent 23-20 loss at Sacramento State. The former three-time All-Central Idaho League selection now has a 39 tackles on the season, which include a team-high 12 tackles for losses for a combined 64 yards in losses and team-high 4.5 sacks for 32 yards in losses for Idaho (4-7), which will wrap up Big Sky Conference play when they host Idaho State for Senior Day and the Potato State Trophy showdown this Saturday. It's the 47th meeting in the series' history, which dates back to 1916.

Luke McCorckle, Whitworth University Football

A 2022 graduate of Sandpoint High, Luke, a 6-foot-1-inch senior defensive back, came away with a fumble recovery in a recent 29-0 win over Willamette that helped the Pirates clinch at least a share of the Northwest Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Division III football playoffs. The former All-Inland Empire League honoree also had a tackle, his 13th of the year, in a recent 59-31 win over Puget Sound. With the win, the Pirates clinched the NWC title outright. Whitworth (8-2) will host a familiar foe in Chapman University on Saturday at the Pine Bowl in Spokane for the first round of playoff action, with the winner heading to play the University of Wisconsin at River Falls the following week.

Kerry Johnson, Naval Academy Sprint Football

A 2019 graduate of Sandpoint High, Kerry, in his seventh start of the season at center, helped the Midshipmen to a 20-17 overtime victory over Army this past Saturday at Shea Stadium in West Point, N.Y. The former Bulldog standout helped paved the way for 271 total yards — 149 passing and 122 rushing — and 14 first downs for Navy, which finished the season with an 8-0 record after capturing the annual Star Game and another Collegiate Sprint Football Championship.

"I am so proud of these guys," head coach Major Carter Reading, USMC said post-game to the Navy Sports Information Department. "They never stopped fighting. We needed everyone and that's what we got. It was a great way to continue our legacy and get the 50th victory in program history against Army. We couldn't have done this without our coaches, TADs, all the support staff, and, most importantly, the team. Team captains Seamas (Carrasco) and Kerry (Johnson) leading this team to the perfect season is a true testament to the leadership and culture of excellence that this team represents."

Drew Lehman, Columbia Basin College Baseball

A 2025 graduate of Sandpoint High, Drew, a 6-foot freshman utility player, recently finished off a solid season of fall ball for the Hawks, which included scrimmages against Big Bend, Mount Hood, Spokane Falls, Central Washington (NCAA Division II), and an array of high school "all-star" teams from around the Pacific Northwest. Primarily seeing time at third base and in the outfield, the former Bulldog standout posted a .323 batting average, .456 on-base percentage, eight stolen bases, and 12 RBI among all of the contests. All of the aforementioned statistics ranked among the top eight on the squad, with the RBIs being the team's third-best. In a three-game, intrasquad, CBC "World Series", Lehman, set to potentially see some significant time this spring, was 6-for-10 with four walks, five runs, and three RBI.

Aubree Lane, Spokane CC Volleyball

A 2024 graduate of Sandpoint High, Aubree, a 5-foot-10-inch sophomore pin hitter, recently posted 12 kills, 12 digs, two block assists, an ace and a season-high 35 serve receptions in a recent 3-2 NWAC West Regional first-round win at Highline College in Des Moines, Wash. this past Saturday. The following day, the former All-Inland Empire League pick had seven kills, two assists, two aces, a season-high 16 digs, three block assists and 12 serve receptions in a NWAC West Regional second-round matchup that saw the Sasquatch take down Bellevue by a score of 3-1. Lane, who reached 400 kills and 350 digs on her career with her recent efforts, also recently received NWAC All-Region Second Team honors for the second straight season. Spokane (20-9) will play Treasure Valley in the NWAC Elite 8 this Friday at Columbia Basin College.
