PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeland handles Lake City in season opener

RATHDRUM — Junior Mariana Bullington and freshman Jaeli Hoffman scored 16 points as the 5A Lakeland Hawks defeated the 6A Lake City Timberwolves 54-28 in the season opener for both teams Tuesday at Hawk Court.

Junior Macy Bretveld added nine points for the Hawks, who outscored the Timberwolves 20-7 in the second quarter, and held the visitors to four points in the third quarter. 

Junior Ella Pearson led Lake City with 14 points. 

On Thursday, Lakeland hosts Timberlake and Lake City plays at Mountain View of Meridian in the first of three games in three days.

SANDPOINT — Junior Olivia Hollenbeck scored eight points, all in the first quarter for the 6A Trojans, who fell to the 5A Bulldogs at Les Rogers Court. 

“We got out to a really quick start and moved the ball really, really well,” first-year Post Falls coach Brian Carlson said. “Their press really sped us up in the second quarter and we took some wild shots. We played well in the third quarter, but they slowly pulled away. The girls showed some great improvement from the game against Moscow. Our goal is to continue to get better all season long.” 

Sophomore Jaya Felix scored 13 points for Post Falls (0-2), which plays at Owyhee of Meridian on Thursday in the first of three games in three days.

Junior Brecken Mire scored 21 points for Sandpoint in its season opener.

SPIRIT LAKE — The Tigers missed a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer in a loss to the Bengals in the nonleague opener for both at Timberlake High. 

“We played hard and the intensity was good,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “We just had a hard time scoring the ball. We had four kids in their first high school game and had another in her first Idaho-sanctioned game. We’ll get better from this.” 

Senior Malia Miller scored 20 points and senior Payton Young added 15 points for Timberlake, which travels to Lakeland on Thursday. 

Paytland Schnell scored 10 points for Lewiston.

Junior Khepri Wood scored 14 points for Wallace, which hosts Troy in the opening round of the Silver Valley Tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

Daisy Williams scored 17 points for St. Maries, which hosts Moscow on Friday.

CLARK FORK — Senior Kyleigh Wolfe scored 32 points and the visiting Knights opened their season with a Scenic Idaho Conference victory over the Wampus Cats. 

Tylah Lambert added nine points, Kimberly Pluff eight for Lakeside, which made nine 3-pointers. 

“Pretty happy with us for a first outing,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “Pretty happy with our conditioning, and we shot the ball well.” 

Freshman Vanessa Rogier scored 10 points for Clark Fork (0-2, 0-1 NSL), which lost 49-16 to the Post Falls JV on Monday night. 

Lakeside plays at Bonners Ferry on Thursday.
