PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sandpoint uses balanced scoring attack to start Schoening era with win
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 4 weeks AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | November 19, 2025 3:00 PM
Sandpoint 62, Post Falls 48
SANDPOINT — Junior Brecken Mire tallied a game-high 15 points, 10 in the second half, junior Livia Driggs hit two 3-pointers and scored eight of her 11 points in the second half, and the Lady Bulldogs gave head coach Madi Schoening her first career win as they erased an 11-point second quarter deficit to down the Lady Trojans in a 6A/5A Inland Empire League showdown Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.
Mire also hit a three-pointer, as did junior Jordyn Tomco and sophomore Willow Betz, who both recorded seven points apiece in the winning effort. Senior Jetta Thaete registered nine points and fueled Sandpoint with some offensive rebounds in the second half, where the Lady Bulldogs outscored Post Falls 38-26. Sandpoint trailed 20-9 at one point in the first half after a 20-4 Lady Trojans run.
"Pretty exciting first night, getting that first career win as a head coach was huge for me and something that I was really looking forward to," coach Schoening said. "I give all the credit to the girls — they showed up to play, and despite the big difference in first quarter, they showed up in the second quarter... I thought that was really encouraging for what our season holds for us."
Senior Mia Driggs added six points and five rebounds, Betz had four boards, and junior Carly Laybourne chipped in three points and a game-high four steals. Mire and junior Jaylah Butler also had three steals for Sandpoint, which created 19 steals compared to the Lady Trojans' five on the night.
Coach Schoening said she believes that defense wins games, and that was certainly the case in her team's season opener.
"The biggest difference this year is our defense; we're doing a lot more pressing, high-intensity sets, putting pressure on the ball," Schoening noted. "The girls executed fairly well for it being just the third week of the season. I was really proud of how coachable they were throughout the whole game. It takes a lot of trust... there are some wrinkles that we have to smooth out, but I thought it was a great first win."
Post Falls, which lost to Moscow by a score of 43-37 in their opener, got a team-high 13 points and three steals from Jaya Felix.
Sandpoint (1-0) will travel to Bonners Ferry on Friday for a non-league matchup.

Lady Cats drop first two contests of season
Post Falls JV 49, Clark Fork 16
POST FALLS — Freshman Vanessa Rogier tallied six points and hit a three-pointer in her varsity debut, senior Piper Scarlett added four points, including a three-pointer of her own, but the Lady Cats dropped their season opener to the Lady Trojans' junior varsity squad Monday night at Trojan Court.
Freshman Kiylah Anderson contributed four points, senior Priscilla Mayorga two points for Clark Fork, which trailed by just one point at intermission after a scoreless first quarter.
"We did a great job defensively in the first half and were losing by just one at the break," Clark Fork High head coach Chris Cavanaugh said. "After halftime, we tried our man defense and it really struggled. Once they got some momentum, we couldn't bring it back."
Sophomore Elyssa Raynor had five steals on defense for the Lady Cats.
Two players reached double figures for Post Falls, which outscored Clark Fork 38-6 in the second half.

CLARK FORK — Freshman Vanessa Rogier netted a team-high 10 points, senior Piper Scarlett scored seven points of her own, as the Lady Cats were defeated by the Lady Knights in a home-opening 2A Scenic Idaho Conference matchup on Tuesday night.
Freshman Kiylah Anderson chipped in three points, sophomore Gracie Stevens two points for Clark Fork, which held Lakeside to just a 14-10 scoring differential between the middle two quarters.
"We were down by 22 about halfway through the fourth quarter and hit a wall," Clark Fork High head coach Chris Cavanaugh said. "The seven girls gave it all they had and just ran out of gas in the end. Vanessa Rogier played really well against a really good Lakeside team as a freshman in her second career game."
Senior Kyleigh Wolfe had a game-high 32 points for Lakeside, in what was their season opener.
Clark Fork (0-2) returns to the court on Friday and Saturday for the Silver Valley Tourney in Wallace. They'll face 3A Kellogg in their opening matchup.
