Nov. 20, 1975 – FFA AT NATIONAL MEET

At the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri last week, the Sandpoint FFA chapter received special recognition for its achievements in the National FFA Safety Award Program. At a dinner Thursday evening, chapter member Carol Shook was congratulated for the chapter’s achievement by Charles Furr, Dow Chemical, and Robert Rawson, Farm & Industrial Equipment Institute. Sandpoint’s chapter was one of 92 Safety Award winners.

HOPE BYPASS DELAYED – AGAIN

The Hope highway bypass will not be completed this fall as planned. Work will cease in December and not resume until spring. The project is complete from the Denton Curves west to the East Hope railroad crossing, but the last 1.5 mile section is postponed after the pouring of a special latex cast for the overpass bridge was delayed by rain this fall. The bridge foundations will now be at least 11 years old before the structure is ever opened to the public.

RADIO CERTIFICATE AWARDED

At a Spokane luncheon of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, Pastor Dr. J. Ralph Daugherty of the Sandpoint First Baptist Church became one of 17 persons in the U.S. to receive a certificate for his 60 years as an Amateur Radio Operator. Daugherty [who began his hobby at age 10] said he hopes to be able to receive his 70 year certificate in 1984.

Rev. Jay Witt of the Church of the Nazarene will speak on radio station KSPT on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 10:15 o’clock.

NEW VARIETY STORE GRAND OPENING

Manager of the new Sprouse-Reitz variety store, Glenn L. Bowerman announces the store’s grand opening Friday and Saturday. Door prizes of Mirro-Matic pressure cookers will be awarded, salt and pepper shakers and plastic gifts will be given each lady attending, and there will be candy and balloons for the youngsters. The main floor will display candy, novelties, toys, stationery and the like. Household items and kitchen wares will be in a well-stocked basement, reached by easy steps with handy side rails and located in the center front of the store.

MILLER ELECTED KIWANIS PRESIDENT

Kiwanis club officers for 1951 are: Kermit Miller, president; Frank Harris, vice president; directors Ora Beasley, Frank Evans, Veryl Hoover, Hardy Lyons and Leonard Mitchell, with Les Burgwardt and Dick Flye holdovers from last year’s board. The new board will name the  secretary and treasurer.

PAT’S ELECTRIC MOVES

Pat’s Electric is moving to larger quarters at 100 N First, having outgrown its store at 409 Cedar. Owner Pat Sulzle will continue the same refrigeration and heating lines, as well as small appliance repairs.
