Spirit Lake karate team wins at Portland tourney

Team Universal Kenpo Kung Fu Association, a karate team based in Spirit Lake and Sandpoint, earned eight first-place trophies, five second-place trophies and three third-place trophies at the Mighty River Classic karate tournament on Nov. 1 at the Portland Expo Center in Portland, Ore.
The tournament is one of the largest open karate tournaments held in the Pacific Northwest.
“There were excellent teams from Washington and Oregon in this tournament," Team Captain Alannah Winland said. "The competition level was very high. Each member of our team faced challenges and overcame them. This allowed every member of our team to return home with multiple trophies. I am very proud of Team UKKA.”
