100th Libby Audubon Christmas Bird Count set for Dec. 19
The Western News | The Western News | UPDATED 1 week, 2 days AGO
Exactly 100 years ago, Winton Weydemeyer, avid conservationist, tree farmer, Master of the Montana State Grange, Montana legislator and long-time resident of Fortine, conducted the first Christmas Bird Count in the Libby area.
With limited road and trail access he still covered 24 miles on foot and observed 13 species of birds.
One hundred years later on Friday, Dec. 19, birders from our area will again take to the forest and streams and record every bird to be found. Each years’ data will be compared to all of the observations collected back from Winton’s time to help determine the status of all of our local species.
Anyone interested in participating either as a field observer or watching and recording from your own home, especially if you have bird feeders, please contact Gene Reckin at 406-291-8482.
