Vralts Layer, Polson’s new hobby shop at 211 Main Street, specializes in RC cars, models, fantasy adventure and card games.
Owners James and Shannon Niblack are selling fantasy advent calendars for the Christmas season and stocking their store with Legos since they are an official Lego dealer. They offer Magic the Game, Pokemon, Dungeons and Dragons and other trading card games. (The Niblacks were gifted some cards to give away free to Polson children.)
Also on their shelves are remote control cars, slot cars (they have a slot track coming for playing Racing Knights, etc.), model airplanes and helicopters, model railroads, “dice galore,” and 3-D printed items made in the Mission Valley.
Shannon said more merchandise is arriving daily, and she’s busily displaying the fun new items.
Open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. through “8-ish” p.m. with an occasional lunchtime close, Vralts Layer rents game rooms for $5 for two hours “if you want to come play Dungeons or Dragons or some other game,” James said. They also will hold birthday parties for $75.
The couple, who have lived in the Mission Valley for 20 years, say they started the business because there’s is no other place like it locally. James has been involved in fantasy card games and models for years, so the store provides a place to enjoy his own collection and introduce other folks to the genre.
Special days at the shop will be Magic Mondays, Pokemon Wednesdays, and Dungeons and Dragons Saturdays. Another room at the back of the shop offers a free table to use for Lego creations.
“You can play chess or checkers, throw darts or throw axes. Just come in and have a relaxed time with your kids,” James said. “Literally, it’s free.”
They also offer Montana Coffee Traders blends for $3 a shot if a visitor needs some caffeine.
The couple plans to open a candy store, with tasty truffles from Chico Hot Springs and taffy and other treats from the Sweet Palace in Philipsburg.
The Niblacks also have a gaming license for 50/50 drawings and raffles and are currently selling $5 Special Olympics raffle tickets.
James is planning a giving tree for those who have been pinched financially by the SNAP rollback. Community members can donate non-perishable food or toys, and no questions will be asked if someone needs a holiday helping hand.
According to James, Vralts Layer is an open and non-discriminatory place for people of all ages and from all walks of life. They will throw a grand opening in late January or February.
“It’s a local business, so bring your kid in this winter,” he said.

Rain fails to quench St. Paddy’s Day parade or spirits
It’s always a guessing game on St Patrick’s Day - will it be stormy or sunny (or both)? As someone whose birthday is on March 17, I can tell you the scales tip heavily towards stormy and last Tuesday was no exception.
