SAGLE — An early morning housefire in the 200 block of Tranquil Trail has left a family of five displaced. There were, however, no injuries.

Selkirk Fire Rescue and EMS responded to the fire in an attached garage at 5:02 a.m. on Tuesday. When firefighters responded, they found the fire spreading from the attached building to the residence. Selkirk Fire Chief Jeff Armstrong said crews were able to stop the fire in the attic before it destroyed the home. 

Armstrong said the response was a success, and that while the house will need repairs, they will not need to completely tear down the structure. He said the house had wood paneling and that they were only to save the house thanks to the quick response effort. 

In addition to Selkirk Fire, Northside Fire District, Sandpoint Fire and the Timberlake Fire Protection District responded to the fire. Timberlake was able to supply the early responding engines with water; while Sandpoint provided additional staffing to quell the fire. 

Armstrong said they had seven firefighters at the house in under 10 minutes, and if they were even three or four more minutes late, the outcome could have gone much differently. He said he was proud of his team for their effort and that they were able to save much of the interior of the home. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

"This incident highlights what can be accomplished when adequate staffing and response times align," Armstrong said. 

In the wake of the fire, Jessi Johnston, owner of two small businesses in Sandpoint, started a GoFundMe for the displaced family. In the GoFundMe, the affected family said they are staying with a family friend and requested towels and shoes. 

Johnston said the family requested small or monetary donations during this time to help the family stay afloat.
