Commerce Department names Economic Development and Competitiveness czar

OLYMPIA — Andrea Chartock has been tapped to lead the state’s Office of Economic Development and Competitiveness, according to an announcement from the Washington State Department of Commerce, which administers that office. Chartock was previously with the international development company DAI and has more than 25 years of experience in global economic development, spanning more than 30 countries. 


“Andrea is an exceptional addition to Commerce,” said Commerce Director Joe Nguyễn wrote in the announcement. “She has the experience and dedication needed to elevate our existing business community and foster growth in innovative ways. I am delighted to have her join our team.” 


Chartock’s responsibilities include industry sector development, circular economy, rural and marketing services, small business export assistance, small business finance and community support, finance and grant services, and contracts and procurement. She will serve on the agency’s Executive Leadership Team, according to the announcement. 


Chartock has a master’s degree in international policy studies and an undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University, the Commerce Department wrote. Her experience includes supporting small and medium-sized enterprises to increase sales, jobs, exports and attract investments, according to the announcement. In her previous role, she implemented projects with U.S. Agency for International Development funding and has led teams completing assessments to understand market opportunities and constraints to design and manage inclusive economic development programming. 


She has extensive experience in the industry sectors important to Washington, such as agriculture – tree fruit, grain and berries – as well as information and communication technology, tourism, creative economy, industrial symbiosis, forest products and clean tech.  


“I’m excited to join Commerce and the Office of Economic Development and Competitiveness. My focus will be on the growth of high-quality jobs, market expansion for businesses, and equitable economic development across all communities in Washington,” Chartock wrote. “I look forward to strengthening what works and enhancing our efforts to help Washington thrive.”
