LOCAL WATCH: Priest River product McLain named Big Sky Honorable Mention
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 6 days, 15 hours AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | November 28, 2025 12:00 PM
Matyus McLain, University of Idaho Football
A 2023 graduate of Priest River High, Matyus was recently one of five Vandals to receive Big Sky Conference accolades, which were announced Wednesday by the organization. McLain, a 6-foot-4-inch, 255-pound defensive end, was named an Honorable Mention, meaning he garnered at least three votes from the league's head coaches, who could not vote for their own players. In his third year as a Vandal, the former Spartan standout tallied 42 total tackles, 19 of which were solo and 23 of which were assisted. Among those tackles, a team-high 13.5 of which went for losses, the second-most in the entire conference according to official statistics, and equaled 65 yards in opponent losses. He also added a team-high 4.5 sacks, forced a fumble, and recorded four quarterback hurries. Highlight games from McLain's 2025 campaign include, but are not limited to, a fourth-quarter strip sack against Washington State on Aug. 30; a season-high seven total tackles, which included three tackles for losses that resulted in a combined 19 yards in lost ground against St. Thomas on Sept. 6; a season-high 3.5 tackles for losses that went for a combined 17 yards against Eastern Washington on Oct. 18; and his sack in overtime that helped the Vandals to a win over Northern Arizona on Oct. 31. On his career, McLain, pursuing a degree in Exercise, Sport, and Health Sciences, now has 49 total tackles, 15 of which have been for losses that include five sacks, across 24 games played.
