Farmers Market trials a new, more visible location

The Bonners Ferry Farmer’s Market had a change of location Saturday, Sept. 27 as it switched its location from the parking lot next to the visitor’s center to Main Street for a one-off edition of the farmer’s market.
Around 30 vendors were present, covering two blocks. It is unknown if the farmer’s market will move to Main Street permanently.
There were no significant changes other than the market’s location. However, five vendors opted not to take part in the move to Main Street.
According to several eyewitness accounts, attendance at the market was more than a usual Saturday. While many people loved the location, there were also those who did not.
An informal poll of 15 vendors showed nine vendors preferred Main Street, four were neutral and two said they liked the lot next to the visitor’s center.
Those who preferred the Main Street location said that there was more foot traffic, the area was more beautiful, there was more flow and it was safer for children to be running around, instead of being in a parking lot that was shared with cars.
Those who preferred the parking lot location said they were unable to have their vans be directly next to their tent, causing them to haul their products from where they parked. People who had trouble walking complained that it was harder to walk around.
The last farmer’s market of the season will be the annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4. There will be a cider press to press apples and a photo booth.
In other news, a summer reading contest was held for children of Bonners Ferry and the winners for the most books read were awarded prizes at the farmer’s market. First place went to a fourth grader named Boaz, who read 430 books over the summer. Second place went to his sister Bethel, a second grader who read 330 books. Evelyn, a sixth grader, read 280 books to round out the podium.
In total, 100 kids participated in the competition, reading a total of 3,250 books.
