Lake City Playhouse is alive with Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved classic, "The Sound of Music."
This timeless story of love, courage and music takes the stage with a fresh depth and heartfelt performances that highlight the enduring power of family and conviction.
Set against the backdrop of Austria on the brink of World War II, "The Sound of Music" follows Maria, a young woman who brings joy and music back into the lives of Capt. von Trapp and his seven children. As the family’s love grows stronger, so does their resolve to stand against oppression, serving as a reminder of the power of hope and integrity.
“Playing Maria means so much to me,” Jolena Long, who plays Maria, said in a news release. "The story carries a deeply personal weight. It represents overcoming fear and those beautiful full-circle moments that we’re lucky enough to experience in life. I think our production does a beautiful job of emphasizing the relationships between the characters, bringing a certain depth that is unique among productions of 'The Sound of Music.'”
That focus on relationships extends into the music itself.
“I loved working on all of the classical choral a cappella songs — it’s been a joy to bring this music to life and hear it bloom through the cast’s voices," Music Director Kylee Fernandez said, reflecting on the rehearsal process.
For Mike Dunn, who takes on the role of Capt. von Trapp, the production is just as much about conviction as it is about music.
“What makes Capt. von Trapp such a compelling character is not just his commanding presence, but the heart that guides his choices,” Dunn said. “His deep love for his family and his unwavering commitment to his principles are at the core of who he is. It’s been an honor to bring that depth of conviction to the stage.”
"The Sound of Music" runs Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. through Oct. 12.
Tickets are $30.75 for adults and $25.75 for seniors, military and students.
