Kootenai man arrested, battery on peace officer

KOOTENAI — A Kootenai man was arrested late last month on charges relating to disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.
David Eugene Dorland, 57, was charged with one count of felony battery on a peace officer and misdemeanors of disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.
Dorland is currently being held at the Bonner County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
He is expected to appear in court Wednesday, Oct. 8, for a preliminary hearing with Magistrate Judge Justin Julian. During that hearing, a motion will be heard for a bond reduction.
A probable cause affidavit indicates that police became aware of Dorland’s alleged actions by way of a 911 call, where the caller informed law enforcement that Dorland was allegedly yelling at neighboring chickens and throwing wood and dog feces over his neighbor's fence and into his yard.
According to witnesses, Dorland was also seen encouraging his dog to kill the same chickens he was yelling at.
When law enforcement arrived at Dorland’s residence, documents state that he commanded his dog to attack the peace officer. Upon being taken into custody, Dorland resisted arrest by “headbutting” the officer trying to arrest him.
If found guilty, Dorland could be listed as a persistent violator due to being convicted of two felony DUIs — one in 2017 and the other in 2011. Known as the “three-strike law,” Dorland could be facing extra penalties if found guilty of a felony for a third time.
