PREP ROUNDUP: Post Falls caps long week with win

BATTLE GROUND, Wash. — Earlier this week, Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett stressed to his team to control what it could control. 

On Friday, Post Falls took control early, and kept it late. 

Senior Connor Carver caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Caden Reese 32 seconds into the game, and the Trojans held off the Battle Ground Eagles 16-8 to improve to 3-3. 

The early score was set up by a fumble on the opening kickoff, recovered by Post Falls. 

Sophomore Bradyn Singleton kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter, and the Trojans led 10-0 at halftime. 

“Our special teams came out and did a great job on that opening play,” Bennett said. “Our defense was lights-out tonight.” 

Post Falls (3-3) left Thursday for the trip to Battle Ground, a 386-mile trip. 

“We really wanted to refocus on football after a long week,” Bennett said. “Our administration allowed us to leave early and really have a first-class experience. Coming down a day early really helped us.” 

Senior Brandon Felix scored with 10:13 remaining to make it 16-0 for Post Falls before Battle Ground cut the deficit to 16-8 with 3:11 remaining. 

The Trojans recovered an onside kick and were able to run out the clock. 

“We had a couple of big conversions that allowed us to keep the ball and run the clock out,” Bennett said. “It’s definitely something we can build on for next week.” 

Post Falls hosts Moses Lake (Wash.) next Friday.

SANDPOINT — Scoring points wasn’t the problem for the visiting Timberwolves. 

Stopping the home team was. 

Sandpoint scored on the first play of the game, and Brock Yarbrough had two 101-yard interception returns for touchdowns as the Bulldogs (6-1) beat the T-Wolves (1-5) at Barlow Stadium. 

Britton Johnston threw a pair of touchdown passes to Landon Leveque for Lake City, and Johnston also ran for a score. Johnston threw for 210 yards, Brayden Van Leuven ran for 136 yards and a score, and Leveque had six catches for 107 yards.

“Great job by (Sandpoint) coach (Ryan) Knowles putting his guys in position to be successful, and they executed very well,” Lake City coach Byron Hout said. “Sandpoint is a very well-coached team. Yarbrough made a lot of great plays tonight, but I was still proud of the way the offense played. The bottom line is I didn’t have the defense ready to play today and that’s on me.”  

Braden Buckhout passed for two scores and ran for two more for Sandpoint. Buckhout connected with Maverick Gomez on a 66-yard TD pass on the game’s first play, and Sandpoint built a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter. 

With Lake City down 19-7 and driving, Yarbrough intercepted a T-Wolf pass just into the end zone, and took it all the way back to make it 26-7 Bulldogs.  

Yarbrough’s other pick-six came with Sandpoint up 40-20 late in the fourth. 

Lake City plays host to Coeur d’Alene next Friday to open 6A Inland Empire League play. 

“We’re looking forward to league play next week at home,” Hout said.

RATHDRUM — Senior quarterback Peyton Hillman threw for five touchdowns, all in the first half, for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Tigers at Corbit Field. 

“We wanted to come out and throw the ball around a little bit and we were able to do that tonight,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “The passing game was really clicking tonight, but we’ve got to play a little cleaner and eliminate the penalties.” 

Senior Cash Lund had touchdown catches of 37, 18 and 22 yards for Lakeland (7-0), which returns to action against Sandpoint in a 5A Inland Empire League showdown Oct. 17 at Barlow Stadium in Sandpoint. 

Timberlake (1-6) travels to Moscow next Friday in Intermountain League play.

Rocky Mountain tournament 

MERIDIAN — Coeur d’Alene lost to host Rocky Mountain 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 and beat Bonneville of Idaho Falls 25-21, 25-12, 25-12 on the first day of two days of predetermined matches at Rocky Mountain High. 

Senior Kaylee Paulson had 20 kills, 22 digs and three aces on the day for Coeur d’Alene (16-2). Gianna Callari added 18 kills and eight blocks, Hannah Shafer 37 assists and seven aces, Bridget Maiani 25 digs and three aces, Eva Callari nine assists, Jovie Le four blocks. 

Lake City also went 1-1 on the day, beating Pocatello 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-9 and losing to Centennial 25-18, 25-23, 27-25 

Sophomore Ella Jeanselme had 33 kills and 36 digs on the day for Lake City (6-12). Camryn Woodman added 29 kills and 34 digs, Kate Moglia 76 assists and nine kills, Sofia Peressini 43 digs.  

“Left some opportunities slip through the cracks,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “But collectively, it was better balanced volleyball across the span of the afternoon, so lots to look forward to tomorrow with great competition and more chances to grow. The girls battled and it was fun to see.” 

The tournament concludes today.
