Vikings suffer painful loss at Camas

CAMAS, Wash. — In a game cleanly played for three quarters, turnovers in the fourth quarter decided this one.
With the game tied after three quarters, Coeur d’Alene lost two fumbles and Camas turned both into touchdowns and the Papermakers went on to beat the Vikings 26-7 on Friday night at Doc Harris Stadium.
Coeur d’Alene (3-3), which had won its last three games, lost senior quarterback Caden Symons to a broken collarbone in the first half. And star junior linebacker Ben Murray hobbled off the field in the second half.
“Tough loss on the road,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “I thought everyone, including us as coaches, hit the panic button at times.”
Camas senior quarterback Tyson Ruggiero, a transfer from Lake City, passed for two scores and ran for another for the Papermakers (4-2), last year’s Washington state 4A runners-up.
In the second quarter, Coeur d’Alene’s Gibson Comstock blocked a punt, and on the next play, quarterback Tannar Stern scampered 20 yards for a touchdown, and the game was tied at 7 at the half.
Early in the fourth, with the game still tied, the lefty throwing Ruggiero connected with Charlie Barr on a 32-yard pass-and-run down the left sideline for a touchdown to put Camas up 14-7.
Coeur d’Alene fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Ruggiero ran it in from 10 yards out to make it 20-7.
The Vikings then lost another fumble, and Camas turned that into an 8-yard run by Thor Brady — the Papermakers’ third score in a span of just over 3 minutes.
Coeur d’Alene travels to city rival Lake City next Friday to open 6A Inland Empire League play.
“We have to regroup fast, because the games that matter start next week,” Amos said.
