PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene boys finish second at Battle for the 509

SPOKANE — Coeur d’Alene sophomore Wyatt Morgenstern was third in the boys varsity championship, finishing in 15 minutes, 22.30 seconds in the eighth annual Battle for the 509 at the Spokane Polo Grounds. 

Sophomore Rowan Henry was fourth, senior Mitchell Rietze 11th for the Coeur d’Alene boys, which finished runner-up to Lincoln of Portland, Ore., 66-67 for the team title. 

Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Annabelle Carr was runner-up in the girls varsity championship race in 18:11.90. Post Falls senior Talia Bonville was fourth, Coeur d’Alene senior Olivia May sixth and Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Helen Oyler 17th to round out locals in the top 20. 

Lincoln won the girls team title.

LEWISTON — Timberlake junior Lola Eggleston was the top local finisher, taking seventh in the girls varsity race at the Inland Empire Championships in 18 minutes, 19 seconds at the Lewis-Clark State Cross Country Trail in Lewiston Orchards, site of the state meet in all classifications on Nov. 1. 

Timberlake juniors Caleb Royce was 11th in 15:31 and Jonathan Barnhart 16th in 15:41, leading the Tiger boys to a fourth-place team finish. 

Rocky Mountain of Meridian swept team titles. Rocky Mountain senior Hallie Heemeyer (girls) and Centennial’s Drew Donahue (boys) won individual titles.

Rocky Mountain tournament 

MERIDIAN — The Post Falls Trojans won four of five matches at the Rocky Mountain High tournament, which concluded Saturday. 

Coeur d’Alene, Lake City and Lakeland all went 3-2 at the two-event, in which the tourney foes were predetermined. 

On Friday, Post Falls defeated the Ambrose School 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 16-14 and lost to Timberline of Boise 28-26, 25-16, 13-25, 25-20. 

On Saturday, the Trojans beat Centennial 25-17, 25-18, 25-19, Melba 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 and Pocatello 25-14, 25-18, 25-15. 

Sophomore Zuri Blood and junior Teresa Smith each totaled 44 kills in the five matches for Post Falls (17-7). Tiffany Foxx added 36 kills and 19 blocks, Annabelle Tucker 34 kills, Claire Ziegler 100 assists, Lucy Carr 78 assists and 45 digs, Mia Carr 75 digs. 

Post Falls is off until next Saturday, when the Trojans visit Lewiston. 

Coeur d’Alene went 2-1 on Saturday. The Vikings beat Highland of Pocatello 25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, lost to Boise 25-11, 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13 and defeated Pocatello 25-13, 25-15, 25-16. 

Gianna Callari had 59 kills, seven blocks and four aces in the three Saturday matches for Coeur d’Alene (18-3). Hannah Shafer added 60 assists, Eva Callari 59 assists, Kaylee Paulson 36 kills and 31 digs, Camryn Farrar 21 kills and 32 digs, Embree McKeown 32 digs and four aces, Bridget Maiani four aces, Jovie Le nine blocks, Marly Sutich seven blocks. 

“We had the opportunity to compete at a high level and work on both our offensive and defensive strategies,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “There were some great rallies and high-pressure situations that gave our younger athletes valuable experience and confidence moving forward.” 

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lewiston on Tuesday. 

Lake City went 2-1 on Saturday. 

On Saturday, Lake City lost to Boise 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 15-12, beat Melba 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 and beat Mountain View 19-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-21. 

Camryn Woodman had 42 kills, 25 digs and three blocks on the day for Lake City (8-13). Ella Jeanselme had 31 kills and nine aces, Kate Moglia 10 kills, 57 assists and 27 digs, Miranda FitzSimmons 13 kills, 24 digs and 41 assists. 

Lake City plays host to Lakeland on Tuesday for senior night. 

Lakeland, on Friday, beat Middleton 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 and lost to Melba 25-23, 21-25, 11-25, 25-14, 15-6. 

On Saturday, Lakeland beat Bonneville of Idaho Falls 25-18, 25-21, 16-25, 2520, beat Timberline of Boise 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 and lost to the Ambrose School 25-19, 25-21, 25-20. 

Against Middleton, Jolie Warren had 15 kills for Lakeland (11-10). Jaeli Hoffman had eight kills, 17 assists and two aces, Kindell Day 29 assists, Chloe Neff 16 digs, Raygen Dutton and Anabel Bowie two blocks each. 

Against Melba, Alyssa Ryckman had 10 kills for the Hawks, Hoffman nine kills and 17 assists, Neff 29 digs, Day 18 assists, Emma Beaty four aces, Dutton two blocks. 

Against Bonneville, Warren had 18 kills and four aces, for Lakeland, Ryckman 10 kills and three aces, Day 21 assists, Neff 16 digs, Bowie three blocks. 

Against Timberline, Ryckman had 10 kills and 10 digs for the Hawks, Warren 10 kills, Hoffman 21 assists and three aces, Day 13 assists, Bowie three blocks, Neff 10 digs. 

Against Ambrose, Warren had seven kills, Bowie four blocks, Neff 12 digs, Day 10 assists, Hoffman eight assists, Beaty two aces. 

"We showed grit and determination throughout,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “Jolie Warren was a force on the outside, delivering consistent and powerful swings to keep our offense rolling. Chloe Neff impressed with outstanding digs and steady serve receive, anchoring our defense. In the middle, Anabel Bowie came up big with several killer stuff blocks that changed the momentum in key moments. Setter Jaeli Hoffman showcased great decision-making running the offense — but what stood out even more were her aggressive right-side attacks that caught opponents off guard. Adding to the excitement, it was Jaeli’s birthday, and her energy, grit, and determination made her performance even more special.”

ST. MARIES — The host Lumberjacks fell to Bonners Ferry 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-11 and to Moscow 25-21, 25-10, 25-22 in a tri-match. 

Against Bonners, sophomore Dimercia Spooner had 16 kills and seven digs for St. Maries. Lyssa Watkins had 14 assists, Taryn Brebner four assists and five digs, Brooklyn Scheffelmaier three digs. 

Against Moscow, Spooner had five kills and four blocks, Watkins seven assists, Scheffelmaier four digs, Brebner six assists and three kills, Letty Smith four kills and two blocks. 

"We played very well today,” St. Maries coach Tammie Woster said. “Both Moscow and Bonners had us on task. Serves were a strong force in both games. Letty had 21 and Lyssa 13 service points in the first match alone. The back row defense was getting where it needed to be pretty much all day. Transition off the net is coming along. We also had a freshman, Bristal Thorhaug, step in and help out in our back row; she did great.” 

St. Maries (1-15) plays host to Kellogg on Thursday in a Central Idaho League match.

MOSCOW — Senior forward Ethan Hunt scored in the 65th minute, but the Hawks were unable to notch the tying goal in the final moments of a 2-1 5A Inland Empire League loss to the Bears at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. 

Jonas Mordhorst scored in the first minute for Moscow, who took a 2-0 lead early in the second half. 

“(Lakeland goalkeeper) Ty (Van Meeteren) had his hands on the ball, got bumped and lost the ball and they scored right away,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “The officals came together, and allowed it anyway. We came out a little flat and didn’t play with much energy and Moscow was motivated.” 

Lakeland (5-8-1, 2-5-1 5A IEL) will be the fourth seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament, and host Post Falls in an opening round match on Tuesday. 

Moscow (7-5-1, 5-2-1) will be the second seed and host Lewiston in the opening round Tuesday.
