SANDPOINT — Family, friends and colleagues of Michael Aerni packed Sandpoint’s City Council chambers last Wednesday ahead of his ceremonial badge pinning as he was promoted to lieutenant.
After joining the Sandpoint Pollice Department full-time in 2012, Aerni has worked his way up from a patrol officer, becoming a detective before recently rejoining the city’s patrol division. As Police Chief Corey Coon invited him up to celebrate and have his new badge pinned, cheers roared from the audience.
“From the beginning, Mike has approached his work with the enthusiasm of what I can best describe as either a cat in a yarn store or a bull in a china shop,” Coon said. “Mike has consistently demonstrated a willingness to collaborate with his fellow officers, contribute to department goals and engage with the community her serves.”
Coon said that Aerni will be tasked with leading the department’s investigation division, overseeing its community resource officers as well as supporting existing staff.
Aerni was named the 2014 Crisis Intervention Training Officer of the Year for his work saving a woman from jumping from a local bridge. In addition to this early honor, he has been the lead forensic investigator on cases within Sandpoint, Bonner and Boundary counties.
Coon applauded Aerni for his relentless enthusiasm, which he said has only grown stronger as a police officer as he has faced more challenges.
While you might have run into Aerni as an officer, you might also recognize him from one of his numerous side gigs. As the head DJ at Sandpoint DJ, Aerni and his son Calvin, have helped numerous couples party the night away for weddings or brought the energy to events across North Idaho.
His love for music doesn’t stop there. The public can also find Aerni playing local music with his band The Traveling Huckleburys, playing classic rock and folk music across Bonner and Boundary counties.
“On top of all those tasks that he has, including his full-time job at the police department, he’s continued to excel in every category,” Coon said. “His commitment to public safety and community service is truly commendable.”
