Boys soccer wins North title

The boys and girls teams pose with their respective North A trophies at Whitefish on Tuesday. The girls tied the Bulldogs, 1-1 and the boys won, 2-1 over the Bulldogs.
The Columbia Falls boys soccer team won the North A conference title Tuesday, Oct. 7 by beating Whitefish 2-1.
The Wildcats struck first in the 25th minute when Whitefish scored an own goal. Jack Harris added another goal in the 50th minute off a pass from Brady Bell, extending the lead 2-0.
Another own goal occurred in the 58th minute, this time coming from the Wildcats side, giving the Bulldogs life. But goalie Brady Heitz protected the victory with 13 saves for Columbia Falls in the end.
The team took Libby by storm on Saturday, Oct. 4, by a score of 5-0. On senior night, senior Jackson Scholz netted himself a hat trick on the evening and senior Jack Harris added a pair of goals, too.
The game started out slow with neither team scoring in the first half, but Columbia Falls would come out on fire after the half with a shot by Harris (Brady Bell assist) scored right at the 43 minute-mark followed by his second goal of the evening at the 47 minute-mark (Bell). From there, the Cats would control the remainder of the game with three more from Scholz.
Columbia Falls had 21 shots compared to just three allowed for Libby. Brady Heitz came away with three saves in the game, and the Cats would have three fouls to Libby’s four.
“Senior night is always a very special night for our student athletes. We celebrate four years of their dedication to the programs, and we made sure that every senior started the game,” coach O’Brien Byrd said. “Libby is a tough opponent this year. We had a lot of trouble breaking down their defense, but it was mostly self-inflicted. The coaching adjustment we made at halftime was just one thing: speed of play had to be much higher. The boys stopped overthinking the space given to us and moved the ball very, very quickly in the second half combining for brilliant goals. The hat trick performance from Captain Jackson Scholz was incredible.”
The Cats JV also played this past week on Thursday when they matched up against the Browning Indians. The JV came out on top 6-0. Scoring in the contest were: Silas Hamilton (2), Easton Corbett (2), Jackson Schnabel, Noah Hutchinson.
