After several weeks without a game, the Plains Horsemen returned to the football field Friday, hosting Arlee for homecoming and falling to the visiting Warriors 52-32 in spite of the Plains boys’ best efforts. Now 0-2 on the field and 0-6 overall with the missed games counted in, the Horsemen are scheduled to visit 4-2 Superior Friday.

“Our goal as a team (against Arlee) was to play with maximum effort no matter the outcome,” coach Mike Tatum said, “and they did just that.”

“Eddie Siebert, our starting QB, looked comfortable and was able to adjust to the speed of the game,” Tatum said. “He hit multiple receivers and kept many plays alive with his legs.”

Tatum said Eddie’s brother Jeff Siebert, also found his groove, catching a 21 yard touchdown pass from Greg Tatum, and an extra point pass later in the game.”

Tatum said Cody West also showed why he is pretty special all around, scoring two touchdowns, making a long run on a fake punt, and pulling down multiple tackles.

The Horsemen coach also complimented the efforts of Beau Crabb and Matthew Thurston. “We can't always see Beau on the field, but you can definitely hear him. Whether he is tackling or running with the ball, he brings the boom,” Tatum said. “And our man of the night had to be Matthew. He had a solid first half but was amazing in the second half. That’s when he made most of his tackles, intercepted a pass, caused and recovered a fumble, had a 32 yard kickoff return, caught a touchdown and laid multiple bone jarring hits on bigger opponents.”

Tatum praised his entire team’s play. “To say we are proud of these 10 guys would be an understatement,” he said. “They played their hearts out beyond measure.”

Eddie Siebert threw for 138 yards and three touchdowns and Greg Tatum added 21 yards passing with another touchdown pass. West ended up with 67 yards receiving and two touchdowns scored, Thurston added 39 yards and a touchdown, and Jeff Siebert 48 yards receiving and another touchdown.

Eddie Siebert had 42 yards rushing and Crabb 20 with a touchdown scored. West added 35 yards rushing on a fake punt. Crabb and Thurston each added 32 yard kickoff returns.

Thurston led the Horsemen defense with 15 tackles, a sack, an interception and a caused fumble and recovered fumble, Greg Tatum added five tackles, Crabb six and West five.

Hawks await playoff fate

The playoff fate of the Blue Hawks is in the hands of others as Northern conference teams head into the final week of regular season play, but you won’t find coach Jared Koskela and his scrappy young squad fretting about it. They just want to play another day, whichever way they have to do that.
